Medical camp
The Bharat Vikas Parishad organised a medical camp for patients of skin diseases here on Sunday. Mr Manoranjan Kalia, Health and Family Welfare Minister, Punjab, inaugurated the camp and donated Rs 20,000 from his discretionary fund. More than 550 patients were examined and medicines were distributed free of cost.

Appointments
Dr Sikander Singh, president of the District Congress Committee, has appointed Mr Surjit Singh Sahi of Sirhind as general secretary of the DCC. He also announced the appointment of Mr Sahbaz Singh Dhillon and Mr Bakshish Singh as general secretary of the Block Congress Committee, Mandi Gobindgarh, and vice-president, of the Block Congress Committee, Khamanon, respectively.

Vanamahotsava
About 200 saplings of different varieties were planted on Monday during Vanamahotsava function organised by the Basti Tankanwali branch of Punjab National Bank. The bank's Regional Manager, Mr T.R. Anand, and Principal Kanta Gupta were the chief guest and the guest of honour respectively.
Fashion show
The local branch of the National Institute of Fashion Design (NIFD) will organise a fashion show — "Pehrava-98" — at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Stadium here, on August 18. According to an information top models, including Sheweta Menon, Mehar Bhasin, Karminder, Ruchi, Ayesha Prem, Jaishree, Aanchal, Seitu, Satvinder and Tina, will participate in the show.

Test
Punjabi University will conduct the joint entrance test for migration to BDS second year dental colleges in the state on September 6 and a brochure will be available from August 13, according to a university press note.

PHAGWARA

Dharna
Railway commuters staged a dharna on the railway tracks near Khera crossing here on Monday, detaining 1-JJ passenger train that runs on the Phagwara-Nawanshahar-Jalandhar section and blocked both up and down trains of the Ludhiana-Phagwara-Jalandhar-Amritsar section. Himgiri Express had to halt for about one hour at outer signal of local railway station. The protesting daily passengers were demanding that in case 2-JRJ train got late then 1-JJ should be given passage at Phagwara instead of Behram.
Bhalai manch

The regional office of the department of social service and survey, IGSA organised a subsidised hepatitis-B vaccination camp at St Soldier Divine Public School here on Tuesday. As many as 201 children were vaccinated during the camp.

Symposium
The Janwadi Vichar Manch organised a symposium on "Nuclear Weapons and Humanity" here on Tuesday. Ms Shubha Sharma, a lecturer of Government College, Rohtak, was the chief orator.

GURGAON

Injured
Haryana Finance Minister, Mr Charan Dass Shorewale was injured near Mahabir Chowk here when the car in which he was travelling collided with a police jeep escorting the car. The car was badly damaged. Mr Shorewale had come here to preside over the monthly grievances meeting at the John Hall.
One killed
One person was killed and four others were injured when a Rajasthan Roadways bus collided with a truck on the Delhi-Jaipur road, near Narungpur Maur, on Monday. The injured were admitted in the local General Hospital.
Probe ordered
On a complaint by Mr Mool Chand, a retired teacher of the local DAV School, the Deputy Commissioner has deputed the Additional Deputy Commissioner to probe the selling of school shops by the Managing Committee of the school.

Elected
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Haryana College Teacher Association (Hisar zone): president — Mr Surjit Singh (Jind); vice-president — Mr S.P. Goyal (Hisar); and secretary — Mr Kaushik (Fatehabad).

SONEPAT

Memorandum
Mr Tulsi Ram, general secretary of the Chhaba Khomcha Rehri Union and Hand-driven Rehri Union, sent a memorandum to the Chief Minister, on Monday protesting against the forcible eviction of rehriwallahs of this city by the General Manager of the Haryana Roadways, Sonepat Depot, and the Secretary of the local municipal council, and blamed these officers for harassing and intimidating them.
Chautala's visit
Mr Om Parkash Chautala will arrive here on August 15 for a day's visit. Mr Chautala will address a meeting of the party workers.
Pickpockets

The Kharkhauda police has arrested Ram Niwas and Surinder Singh, both resident of Dairy mohalla, Rohtak. They were caught red-handed while they were allegedly picking pockets of two passengers at the bus stand.
Two arrested

The local police has arrested Amarjit, alias Paramjit and Bhalu Khateek, both resident of Gian Nagar for the murder of Lalit Kumar, a shopkeeper of Ram bazaar. According to the police, both had confessed to their crime.
Liquor seized

A police party of Kharkhauda has foiled an attempt to smuggle IMFL from Delhi to the district and arrested a youngman, Baljit, in this connection. The SP said here on Monday that the police also seized a Maruti car (No DLB 3772) used for the purpose and 60 bottles of English wine, 96 half-bottles, 192 quarters of IMFL and 24 bottles of beer were found in the car. A case under the Excise Act had been registered .
One held

The city police arrested a youngman, Sunil, of Mohalla Kalan in the city for allegedly possessing 100 grams of charas on Sunday. A case has been registered.
Congmen's meeting

Mr Birender Singh, MLA, and former president of the HPCC, will address a meeting of Congress workers here on August 16. Mr Jagbir Singh, a Congress leader said the meeting was a part of a mass-contact campaign launched against the ruling HVP-BJP alliance government.

Truck impounded
The local police has impounded a truck and seized cows which were being transported to Uttar Pradesh for being slaughtered. The police has registered a case.
Drowned
A 20-year-old boy was drowned in the Yamuna , near here, on Sunday. The Radaur police has registered a case and recovered the body.top



Himachal Briefs
DHARAMSALA

Murder
Joginder Singh(34), a resident of Kopda Chokhat village under Jwalamukhi police station, was murdered on Sunday. The police has arrested three persons of the same village and registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC against them.

NURPUR

Case registered
Some villagers filed a case of cheating against panchayat chief following the intervention of the local SDM. The police has registered an FIR under Sections 420 and 406 against Netar Singh, the pradhan of Hatli Jamala Gram Panchayat, of this subdivision on Monday. A large number of villagers had deposited about Rs 10 lakh with the accused who had been running a branch office of a private finance company at Nurpur. He suddenly closed the branch office in March this year when most of the deposit schemes approached maturity dates.

SOLAN

Timber seized
The police seized timber worth Rs 30,000 and impounded a van carrying it, at Saproon locality of this town on Monday. Ashok, a resident of Deothi, was arrested while four others managed to escape.
