Naxals killed
HYDERABAD,
Aug 10 (PTI) Two Naxalites of the Janashakti group
were killed in a police encounter while ultras went on a
rampage, blasting the office and godown of the Nizam
sugar factory in separate incidents in Andhra Pradesh
today. During routine operations at the Nizambad in
Karimnagar district, three ultras on a scooter opened
fire when asked to stop the police said, adding that in
the ensuing fire two of them were killed. In a separate
incident, extremists blew up the sugar factory near
Hindupur in Anantapur district.Bandh called off
CALCUTTA, Aug
10 (PTI) With the intervention of the Congress
high command, the West Bengal Youth Congress today
virtually called off the August 13, 24-hour bandh in the
state, which brought to the fore sharp differences among
state Congress leaders. AICC secretary V. Narayan Swami,
an emissary of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who
chaired a meeting at the PCC office to sort out the
differences over the bandh issue, told news-persons that
the Youth Congress was requested to call off the bandh in
view of the flood situation and coming puja festival.
Flood toll 108
PATNA, Aug 10
(PTI) The overall flood situation in Bihar
continued to be grim today with the death toll mounting
to 108, prompting the Governor to call for a crucial
meeting of political parties and non-governmental
organisations to evolve measures to step up relief and
rescue operations. Raj Bhavan sources said the Governor,
Mr Sunder Singh Bhandari, would hold the meeting on
Wednesday. The Governor had already sent his report to
the Centre, seeking a team to assess the situation.
Fodder scam
PATNA, Aug 10
(PTI) Hawala agent and fodder scam accused, Dipesh
Chandak today petitioned the CBI designated court to turn
approver in an important conspiracy angle case of the
multi-crore scam. Chandak, also a supplier to the state
Animal Husbandry Department, filed the petition through
his counsel Binod Verma, urging the court to allow him to
turn approver and begged pardon. The special judge,
during the day undertook a closed-door recording of his
statement under Section 306, Cr PC, for deciding his
prayer.
Egypt's plea
CAIRO, Aug 10
(AFP) An aide of Mr Hosni Mubarak, President of
Egypt, called on European and Asian nations, including
Pakistan, today to halt the free movement of terrorists,
following the bombing of US embassies in Kenya and
Tanzania. The aide was alluding primarily to Pakistan,
where Saudi-billionaire Osama Bin Laden, one of the main
suspects in Friday's bomb attacks, reportedly organised a
June meeting of Islamic terrorist groups at which a plan
was launched to attack American targets worldwide.
Mother Teresa's
statue
CALCUTTA, Aug
10 (PTI) The city high court today restrained the
Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) from handing over
the plot of land at Park Circus, allotted to the
All-India Minorities and Weaker Sections Council for
erecting a statue of Mother Teresa and cancelled
afterwards, to any other organisation. Mr Justice Prabir
Kumar Sengupta directed the CMC not to hand over the plot
to any other organisation till a petition by the council
challenging the withdrawal of the allotment was disposed
of.
Suu Kyi
YANGON, Aug
10 (AFP) Myanmar Opposition leader Aung San Suu
Kyi is under virtual house arrest with extra riot police
and security checks around her home, the National League
for Democracy (NLD) said today. "This measure
signifies increased restriction of Aung San Suu Kyi and
is tantamount to putting her under house arrest," an
NLD statement said, adding that "if this continues,
the NLD has no other recourse but to take legal
action".
Mission chief dead
CALCUTTA, Aug
10 (PTI) President of the Ramakrishna Math and
Ramakrishna Mission, Swami Bhuteshananda, died at the
Kothari Medical Centre today. He was 97. The Swami, who
was admitted to a hospital on August 5 following
haemorrhage of his intestines, was shifted to the centre
on Friday when an operation became necessary. The
cremation will take place at Belur Math at noon tomorrow.
