LUDHIANA

Lok adalats: Four Lok adalats will be organised at Samrala, Khanna, Jagraon and Ludhiana in August and September. This decision was taken at a meeting of the District Legal Services Authority.

FATEHGARH SAHIB

Old-age home: The district Red Cross Society will start an old age home in the eight rooms constructed at Bhari village. This was announced by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr T.R. Sarangal, in the village on Wednesday. A public darbar was also organised on the occasion where public grievances were redressed on the spot.

HOSHIARPUR

Stipends: Mr Iqbal Singh Sidhu, Deputy Commissioner-cum-chairman of the District Sainik Board, while addressing a meeting of the board said that during the last quarter, stipends worth Rs 3.10 lakh had been given to 297 children of ex-servicemen and Rs 4.18 lakh for the marriage of widows of ex-servicemen.

Nabbed: Tarsem Singh of Dhariwal village was nabbed during a nakabandi and 1.1 kg of opium was seized from him, according to a press note by the police on Wednesday.

Protest: The All-India Sikh Students Federation (Gill) observed a strike at the local R.K. Arya College in protest against the merger of Udham Singh Nagar in the proposed Uttaranchal state.

Dharna: The district unit of the Sanjha Adhiyapak Morcha held a dharna in front of the office of the DEO here on Wednesday in protest against the education policy of the state government.

BATHINDA

Poppy seized: The police on Thursday seized 5.20 quintals of poppy husk from a truck along with 234 bags of cement near Tinkonni on the Malout road. The driver, Mohinder Singh, who was the owner of the truck, was arrested. A case under Sections 15,61 and 95, N.D.P.S. Act, has been registered against him.

Family planning: Himachal Pradesh has come on a par with Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra and Punjab in achieving family planning targets. This was stated by Health Minister, J.P. Nadda, while addressing a state-level prize distribution function at Dharamsala on Wednesday.

Robbed: Mrs Kulwant Kaur of Mamdpur village robbed of her late husband's pension, amounting to Rs 1000, when a youth snatched the money from her as she came out of the main branch of the State Bank of Patiala here after drawing the amount on Monday.

PATIALA

Invited: Dr Jagtar Singh of the Department of Library and Information Science, Punjabi University, has been invited to attend the editorial board meeting of the regional experts on world history of librarianship at Amsterdam in Netherlands on August 16.

Plantation week: The local Rotary Club (mid town) launched a plantation week here on Wednesday by planting 100 saplings of different varieties on the campus of local Government Polytechnic for Women. An exhibition of posters on environment made by students of the polytechnic was also inaugurated by Mr Parampal Singh Sidhu, SSP.top

Dental health: Nearly 5000 children of different schools in the city were examined under a "Smiles for all — national oral health programme", launched by the local unit of the Indian Dental Association.

200 Saplings planted: Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35-D, in collaboration with the SBI, Sector 7, organised a saplings plantation function in the school on Thursday. As many as 2,500 students took out a grand rally carrying placards, banners and posters about the importance of trees and planted 200 saplings.

SPIC MACAY: The Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth will restart the weekly meetings on every Saturday from August 8, press note said here on Thursday. The meetings will be held at 4.30 p.m. at Art Gallery, Sector 10.

Celebrations: The Sector 4 Radha Madhav Mandir Sabha will celebrate Shree Madh Bhagwat Week gyan yagya from August 10 to 17, Mr Vinod Jaidka, press secretary of the sabha, announced.

Drive launched: The district administration has launched a special drive to remove congress grass. This was started by the Deputy Commissioner, Mrs Navraj Sandhu, here on Wednesday.

Donations: The Army Wives Welfare Association of 2 Corps, the Kharga AWWA, has sent 12,000 pieces of clothes for the cyclone victims of Kandla in Gujarat.

BHIWANI

Congress grass: The district administration has launched a campaign to eradicate congress grass from the district under a programme to mark the 50th anniversary of Independence.

FARIDABAD

Arrested: The police has arrested Fauq of Jhonda village, near Hathin, for allegedly killing his brother, Siddiq. A property dispute between the brothers is stated to be the cause of the crime.

SONEPAT

Shot dead: Mr Lalit Kumar, alias Billa, a shopkeeper of the Ram Bazar area, was shot dead by two persons on the Sarang road here on Thursday. The alleged assailants, however, escaped. A case has been registered.

Killed: Mr Satinder Dahiya (25) was killed when his pistol went off accidently in his house at Prabhu Nagar Mandi, near the city police station, here on Wednesday.

KAITHAL

Contempt: The Civil Judge (Senior Division), Mr Inderjeet Mehta, has issued non-bailable warrants against Inspector Sant Ram of the city police station on a contempt petition. The Inspector had failed to appear in the court on the fixed date.

Murder: Rekha (22), a labourer from Bihar working at a cotton factory here, was allegedly murdered by her husband, Mohinder Choudhry, and his friend Ram Dhan on Tuesday. The police has registered a case.

Inaugurated: The newly established Birendra Hospital of Orthopaedics was inaugurated here on Tuesday by Dr S.S. Yadav, a former director of the PGI, Rohtak.top

Ex gratia grant: The local SDM has released Rs 25,000 as ex gratia grant to the father of Sunil Kumar of Milwan village who was allegedly murdered on Tuesday. Ravi Kumar, who was injured in the attack, was given Rs 1,000.

Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Junior Telecom Officers Association here: president — Mr Subhash Chander Purthi; vice-president — Mr Jai Singh Chauhan; and treasurer — Ms Ritu Jain.

KANGRA

Suicide: Rakesh Kumar (23), of Kalaid village, near here, allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday by consuming poison. The body was sent for a post-mortem.
