Mission's security beefed up
ISLAMABAD, Aug 6 (PTI) — In view of surcharged atmosphere over firing along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir and Siachen, the police has deployed heavy contingent of force and erected barbed wire fence around the Indian High Commission here. Police sources said an intelligence organisation reported that shelling by Indian troops in different villages of Pak-occupied Kashmir PoK along the (LoC) has enraged the public in Pakistan and an attack on the Indian mission here was apprehended.

UN conference
GENEVA, Aug 6 (Reuters) — The United Nations Conference on Disarmament (CD) was close today to agreeing to launch fresh negotiations to halt production of nuclear bomb-making fissile material, western diplomats said. But several delegations, including Israel, were waiting for instructions from their capitals on how to vote, they said. A move to set up a committee which would negotiate on fissile material — plutonium and highly-enriched uranium — is seen as the next step in multilateral nuclear disarmament.

Basu heckled
LONDON, Aug 6 (PTI) — Pro-Hindutva groups heckled West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu at a function here last night as he lashed out at the decision of the BJP-led government to go in for nuclear tests. Basu, delivering the last of the freedom lectures to mark the golden jubilee of India’s Independence at the Nehru Centre, was heckled by a section of the audience when he said blunders like the decision to go nuclear, coupled with the rising spectre of criminalisation, communalisation and casteism, would finally bring about an end to communal and sectarian politics in India.

Law and order
NEW DELHI, Aug 6 (PTI) — The Centre today sought more time from the Delhi High Court to file a "status report" on the law and order situation in the Capital in the light of a public interest litigation (PIL). Standing counsel Rakesh Tikku submitted before a Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice Mahinder Narain and Mr Justice Mukul Mudgal that some more time was needed to finalise the report as Additional-Solicitor general associated with the matter was out of the city.

Hiroshima bombing
TOKYO, Aug 6 (PTI) — Indian Ambassador to Japan Siddharth Singh today reaffirmed the country’s commitment to a world without nuclear weapons while his Pakistani counterpart Touqir Hussain defended Islamabad’s nuclear tests saying Indian nuclear tests in May posed "the most serious threat" to Pakistan’s national security. The two envoys were speaking at separate press conferences held after attending a peace memorial ceremony commemorating the 53rd anniversary of Hiroshima’s atomic bombing, reports Kyodo.

War exercises
MANILA, Aug 6 (AP) — President Joseph Estrada and Defence Secretary Orlando Mercado were not informed ahead of time of war exercises with the US Navy in the South China Sea, Mr Estrada said today. He said Philippine navy and air force officials would be asked to explain why they did not inform the country’s top officials of the 18-hour exercises held yesterday outside Philippine territorial waters.

Lawsuit filed
LOS ANGELES, Aug 6 (AFP) — Mimi Rogers, ex-wife of actor Tom Cruise, has lodged a $ 10-million lawsuit against the home shopping network over an article which stated that she wrecked a network waiting room. Rogers, who recently co-starred in "Lost in Space" says in a complaint filed yesterday in a Federal Court here that a network executive was behind the article.

Arafat’s Cabinet
CAIRO, Aug 6 (PTI ) — Two leading members of the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat’s Cabinet today resigned from their post charging the government with corruption, reports said. Ms Hanan Ashrawi, who along with Mr Abdel Jawad Saleh has resigned, said she would continue to serve and work as a legislative council member, but not as a member of Mr Arafat’s government. Mr Arafat formed a new Cabinet yesterday.

Advocate-General
BHUBANESWAR, Aug 6 (UNI) — Orissa Advocate-General Indrajit Ray, who has been chargesheeted by the CBI in a case of outraging the modesty of a dowry victim, resigned from his post. Mr Ray submitted his resignation yesterday. He told newspersons here that he had resigned from the post on personal grounds. Mr Ray said he was grateful to Chief Minister J.B. Patnaik for retaining him as the state Advocate-General for so long.

Husain released on bail
INDORE, Aug 6 (PTI) — Noted painter M.F. Husain today surrendered before a court here and was released on bail on a personal bond of Rs 3,000 in connection with a complaint filed against him for painting a Hindu deity in nude. The Magistrate turned down plea of Husain’s advocate to grant the painter exemption from personal appearance in the court and said the matter could be decided on August 12, the next date of hearing.Top
