Minister sacked
SEOUL, Aug 4 (AFP) — South Korean President Kim Dae-Jung today sacked Foreign Minister Park Chung-Soo for allegedly mishandling an espionage row which has threatened Seoul’s budding ties with Russia. His firing was the culmination of a month-long diplomatic dispute between Seoul and Moscow over tit-for-tat spy expulsions which South Koreans feel has hurt their national pride. Park was replaced by Ambassador-at-large, Hong Soon-Young.

Explosives seized
CHENNAI, Aug 4 (PTI) — More than 150 kg of gelatine and about 1800 electric detonators have been seized and six persons arrested at two different places in Tamil Nadu, the police said today. Nearly 1000 gelatine sticks and an equal number of detonators were seized from two persons at suburban Pammal area of Chennai late last night. In another incident, the police seized about 150 kg of gelatine and 800 detonators and arrested three persons last night at Madathukulam near Udumalpet, about 60 kms from Coimbatore.

Kosovo fighting
PRISTINA, Aug 4 (AFP) — Serb forces controlled nearly all of the central Kosovo region of Drenica today after operations against rebel strongholds in the rebellious province, Serb sources said here. Serb forces now hold the area between the key roads linking Pristina, the Kosovo capital, with Titova Mitrovica in the north and with Pec in the west, the sources said.

Gold seizure
INDORE, Aug 4 (PTI) — Ninety-five gold biscuits, weighing around 11.67 kg and valued at Rs 50 lakh, were seized by the police from two passengers of a private bus in Chandannagar police station area on the Indore-Ahmedabad highway today, the police said. The police acting on a tip-off intercepted the bus and arrested the duo who had concealed the gold biscuits in cotton belts tied around their waist. The two persons, hailing from Indore, were being interrogated, he said.

Gastro-enteritis
MALDA, Aug 4 (PTI) — One person has died and over 200 have fallen ill following an outbreak of gastroenteritis in Malda district of West Bengal during the past seven days, health officials said here today. A team of three doctors had rushed to the affected villages under Bulbulchandi police station to bring the situation under control, Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health S.P. Basak said. The Health Department has made arrangements to distribute adequate quantity of chlorine among the villagers for purifying drinking water, Mr Basak said.

Man kills wife
WASHINGTON, Aug 4 (PTI) — In a bizarre incident, a software engineer of Indian origin is suspected to have committed suicide after killing his wife and son and wounding the only daughter, the police here said today. The police believe Natarajan Ramachandran shot his wife Kalpana and son Raj before killing himself yesterday. According to reports, the family apparently did not have any problems and neighbours termed it as "very sweet, friendly and cheerful".

Assam blast
GUWAHATI, Aug 4 (PTI) — BJP MLA Sambhu Sing Mallah, two of his relatives and six others were injured in an explosion at a leading commercial centre of the city this evening, the police said here. A suspected militant exploded a hand grenade at 7.30 p.m. in front of a garment shop adjacent to the fancy bazar traffic police point, injuring Mallah and others, the police said, adding that the miscreant fled after hurling the grenade. The MLA of Ratabari and his relatives were inside the garment shop which was partly damaged in the explosion. The other injured included the staff of the shop.Top
