Term extended
Guru Nanak Dev University has extended by two years the term of Mr G.S. Bachan as Liaison Officer, NSS. He is on deputation in the Sports and Youth Services Department, Punjab.
Environment mela
A three-day mela was organised at the All- India Women's Conference which concluded on Wednesday. About 200 persons visited the mela each day.

HOSHIARPUR

Medical camp
The district health authorities and the City Heart Club organised a three-day medical check-up camp at Adamwal village for pilgrims going on foot or motor cycles, scooters and cycles to the Chintpurni shrine for the traditional fair of Shrawana Ashtami.
Section 3
The Deputy Commissioner has ordered all healthy adults of the villages in the district to check railway tracks, water outlets, drains and dams of their respective areas round the clock for any damage. These orders have been issued under Section 3 of the Punjab Villages and Small Town Patrol Act, 1918, and will remain in force till September 28.

Inaugurated
The Vice-Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Dr G.S. Kalkat, inaugurated the child day-care centre of the Department of Human Development, PAU, on Thursday.

Principals meet
The annual meeting of principals of Army schools in the northern command was held here on Tuesday at the Headquarters, 21 Subarea. It was inaugurated by Brig. Jagtar Singh, Commander 21 Subarea. About 50 principals of various Army schools and staff officers attended the meeting which discussed ways to improve the standard of education. A book exhibition was also held on the occasion.

Function
Mr Inderjit Singh, Principal of the local Guru Nanak College, delivered the keynote address on illiteracy and the role of NGOs at a function organised by the Rotary Club (South-East) on Wednesday. He stressed the need for adult education and the involvement of non-government organisations in the drive to eradicate illiteracy.
Challaned
In a drive to enforce traffic rules in Kapurthala district, 1130 persons have been challaned for violating the rules and Rs 3.10 lakh collected as fine, the Deputy Commissioner, Mrs Usha R. Sharma, said here on Wednesday.

Mourned
The JCT Electronics Employees Union has mourned the death of Prof Khuspal Singh, a socialist leader and president of the Hind Mazdoor Sabha (Punjab). Prof Khushpal Singh, who was suffering from brain tumour, died at AIIMS on Thursday, a press release said here on Friday.
Contests
The local chapter of the Environment Protection Society organised a painting and an essay writing contest, a press release said here on Friday. As many as 154 students from 10 local schools participated.

FARIDABAD

No clue
Dr Ravinder Dhingra who had been missing for the past six months is still untraced. The case has been handed over to the CBI by the Haryana Government.
Arrested
The police on Wednesday arrested Gauri Shanker and Het Ram for allegedly murdering Ram Swarup on March 13. According to a police spokesman, their three accomplices have escaped to Bihar.

Office-bearers

Judicial custody
The local police has arrested nine persons under Sections 352, 332, 427, 148 and 149, of the IPC, on a complaint of the XEN, HSEB, for damaging the property of the powerhouse here. A court has sent all accused to judicial custody till August 9.

Body found
The police has found the body of a middle-aged man from Madina village, 15 km from here. A case under Sections 302 and 201 of the IPC has been registered.

Donation camp
As many as 28 persons, including three school teachers and four students, donated blood at a camp organised by the Lions Club (Midtown) at Ekta High School, Gohana, 35 km from here, on Thursday.
Died
A veteran Congress activist and lambardar, Gulab Singh, died here on Wednesday after a prolonged illness. Various organisations paid tributes to him.

Demonstration
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad held a demonstration in front of the office of the Principal, Government Post-graduate College, in support of its demands, including elections to the Students Central Association and re-evaluation of examination papers within 40 days.
Eye camp
The district Blindness Control Society will hold a free eye treatment and operations camp at Jhandutta in this district from August 5 to 10. Medicines and spectacles will be distributed free of cost to the patients, according to the Chief Medical Officer, Dr M.L.Mahajan.
Pilgrims
More than three lakh pilgrims have visited the Naina Devi shrine during the past five days of the Shravan Ashtami fair and made offerings of more than Rs 24 lakh.

A sum of Rs 2.62 lakh will be spent in Sirmaur district this year for imparting training to 83 unemployed youth under the rural artisan scheme , the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Rakesh Kaushal, said here on Wednesday.

Criticised
Mrs Kunjna Singh, joint secretary of the All-India Mahila Congress, in a statement issued here on Friday criticised the Union Government for not declaring the trans-giri area of Sirmaur as backward and requested Chief Minister, Prem Kumar Dhumal to take up the matter seriously.

Opposed
The Purolator Colony Mahila Mandal, in a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, Solan, has opposed the move to open a liquor shop at Teepra village, near here. Members of the mandal fear that the shop will encourage criminal activities in the area.
Charter of demands
The Doon unit of the BJP in its charter of demands has asked Chief Minister P.K. Dhumal to develop Baddi and Barotiwala like mini-Chandigarh. It has demanded a separate municipal establishment for the townships and completion of the Chandigarh-Baddi link road.
