Kurukshetra, November 21
An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) and an accused were killed in an encounter near Pipli chowk in Kurukshetra on Friday. The ASI was identified as Kuldeep Singh. Kurukshetra Superintendent of Police (SP) Simardeep Singh said: “We got information around 11.30 pm that two youths had carjacked an Eco Sport at gunpoint near Haveli in Ambala and were heading towards Kurukshetra.

“Two checkpoints were set up to nab the accused, but they crossed the first in Shahabad. On seeing police personnel, barricades and a traffic jam near the Pipli zoo, the accused ran towards Ladwa,” he said.

The SP said the assailants tried to shoot the Shahabad SHO. Teams started a combing operation. A team was patrolling the area near the Sadar police station on the Ladwa road around 1.15 am when Kuldeep stopped a suspect, who shot the ASI in the chest with a countrymade pistol.

Other policemen reached the spot and the accused opened fire. The police retaliated and the accused sustained bullet injuries. The other deceased could be one of the accused, he added.

They were taken to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital, where they were declared brought dead. The ASI died on the spot and the accused on way to the hospital.

Kuldeep (40), a resident of Ramgarh, is survived by his wife and two sons. He was honoured many times for his honesty and daring.

Kuldeep had joined the police as constable in 1989. He was promoted as ASI out of turn in 2008 after he freed a youth from kidnappers who had taken him to Uttar Pradesh. The accused belonged to Karnal district and had many cases registered against him.
