Dist faces shortage of vets
Bathinda, October 29 Interestingly, there are 40 hospitals in Bathinda district, of which 15 are running without veterinary officers. There is no veterinary officer in veterinary hospitals at Kalan, Sukha, Dhipali, Mehraj, Kot, Fatta, Pakka Kalan, Bhagta Bhaika, Rampura, Jhumba, Maluka, Doomwali, Bhuccho, Rama, Bangi, Pathrala and Kotfatta. There is no veterinary doctor at the Bathinda veterinary hospital for the past six months after the doctor from here was transferred to Sema village in the district. Similarly, there is no doctor for the past over a year in Rampura. Bhagta Bhaika resident Gurdarshan Singh, who is having 13 cows and selling milk for the past 10 years, said, “I have never seen a veterinary doctor at our village dispensary and whenever there is a need we call doctors from other villages. Most of the time we call private doctors and for it we pay an hefty fee. A number of times we have approached the Animal Husbandry Department over the issue but all fell on deaf years. A number of villagers who have buffaloes are facing the same problem. Many a time, cows and buffaloes die in the absence of treatment.” Deputy Director of the Animal Husbandry Department Dr Pardeep Bansal said, “Yes, there is a shortage of doctors but soon the government will fill all the vacant posts. The department will install new machines and provide all basic facilities at all veterinary hospitals. The latest equipment and other infrastructure required for the treatment of the animals will be provided to the hospital.”

Congress workers begin silent protest
Bathinda, October 29 As many as 21 workers of the party headed by general secretary of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee and former MLA Harminder Singh Jassi, staged protest today. They said the count of protestors would increase to 31 on Thursday and 51 on Friday. Elaborating on the party’s decision to stage a silent protest, Jassi said the past several incidents had shown that the state government machinery had been tweaked to suppress the voices of dissent by wielding the sticks and attacking the protestors. He alleged that the police stations were being run as per the whims and fancies of the SAD leaders and were being used to frame opposition leaders and workers in fake cases and sending them behind bars. He requested Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and DGP Sumedh Saini to look into the matter and issue directives pertaining to the release of the arrested Congress workers. He threatened to intensify their protest if their demands were not met. Putting a question mark on the law and order situation, Jassi said the crime graph in the city had been on the rise since 2007. While the police force was busy with trivial issues, the criminals were enjoying a free run, he added. Preparing or losing ground for MC elections?
Just before the run-up to the Municipal Corporation elections in the city, the Congress party is seen mired in controversies. Earlier, Jhumba announced a protest against the in-charge of the Vardhaman police post but retracted afterwards. Soon after, he accused the Canal Colony police station SHO of misbehaviour and staged a protest from where he was forcibly taken to the Civil Hospital. After alienating some senior Congress leaders in the city by accepting a sip of juice offered by Chief Parliamentary Secretary Sarup Chand Singla to break his fast-unto-death, two cases were filed against him, one of which was, interestingly, filed by a senior Congress leader. While the din to remove Partap Singh Bajwa from the post of the president of PPCC gets louder across the state with charges of propagating groupism in the party, the Congress party has landed in a tight spot just before the MC elections. DCC and Jassi will have to work hard to make sure that all is set before the MC elections are officially announced. The party will also have to ensure that the workers and leaders are not mired in controversies and instead, may spend their energy and time on the elections. |

Two test positive for dengue
Bathinda, October 29 Four patients have already undergone the macliza test at the Bathinda Civil Hospital out of which two were tested positive for dengue. A health team under the guidance of the district epidemiologist has also surveyed the house of the patient at Deon village. It’s pertinent to note that among the total 87 patients found positive in Punjab, six cases were from Bathinda. About 177 cases of dengue were reported in the district in 2013 whereas the number in 2011 had touched 1,000. As per reports, Rs 20.48 lakh were spent by the MC on fogging from April to June this year whereas, in 2013, about Rs 50 lakh were spent on fogging. Water-holding containers, including plastic, metal drums and cement tanks, facilitate the growth of dengue mosquito. Dengue is one of the major public health problems that can be controlled with the active participation of people and for this there is a need to organise health education programmes about dengue. Dr HS
Haiyer, epidemologist, Bathinda, said, “We followed the cases in our district and sprayed in and around the houses of the patients. Both the patients are now in good health and were treated at a private hospital. We are regularly visiting the areas where water accumulates often and spread awareness.” |

Locals seek direct train to Varanasi
Bathinda, October 29 Mohinder Pal, president, Maha Shakti Bhalai Sangathan, said the birth anniversary of Guru Ravidas was celebrated in a big way at Begumpura in Varanasi every year in February. Last year, around 30,000 devotees from the Malwa region, Sriganganagar and other parts of Haryana had visited Varanasi to participate in the celebrations. This year, the number of pilgrims is expected to touch 45,000. The government should accept our demand for the convenience of pilgrims.” “The pilgrims belonging to the Malwa region assemble at the Bathinda junction to catch trains to Delhi and then take the Shiv Ganga Express from Delhi to
Varanasi. The Shiv Ganga Express reaches Delhi at 7 am but leaves for Varanasi at 7.40 pm. Instead of halting at Delhi for more than 12 hours, the train can pass through the city for at least 15 days in a year during which the pilgrims travel to
Begumpura,” he added. He said though Bathinda was well connected with New Delhi, the absence of a direct train to Varanasi was very discouraging. On the same lines, they have also demanded a direct train between Bathinda and Chandigarh. At present, only the
Shimla-Kalka Express ply between the city and Chandigarh, which leaves for the state capital at mid night and reaches Chandigarh early morning. Thus, government employees and other people fail to use this. The residents have also demanded the rail connectivity between Bathinda and Ludhiana. |

DSP (City) Gurjit Singh Romana said the women cops had been deployed in the city as they were facing a problem in checking the women. |

Bathinda, October 29 As per PSPCL, FCA surcharge has been levied at a rate of 2 paise per kWh on the metered category and 0.06 paise per kWh on the unmetered category (farming sector) to recover Rs. 13.24 crore on account of an increase in the cost of coal and power. With this hike, the consumers in the state will have to shell out more for electricity in Punjab from this month. Raman Watts, president of the Bathinda Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), said, “ The industry in the state is already facing crisis and the decision would further hit it adversely.” Ashik Dhunike, president of the Punjab Beopar Mandal, said the hike in power tariff will increase the price of the essential commodities and the burden will be passed to the traders and
the common man. As the sale of traders will dip, a hike in salaries for workers will also get affected. Parminder Goyal, president of the Bathinda unit (urban) of the BJP, said the government should not put any burden on the common man and it should change it style of functioning. Sandip Garg, a city resident, said the government was hitting the common man hard with its anti-public policies. Another resident Anmol Jain said the government should take back the
decision. |
