SC sets up panel to assess J-K relief work
Legal Correspondent

New Delhi, September 24
The Supreme Court today appointed a five-member committee to assess the situation and relief work in the flood-hit Jammu and Kashmir and submit a report in two weeks. A Bench headed Chief Justice RM Lodha said the Registrar of the state High Court would be the convenor of the committee, which would include a nominee each of the state and the Centre and the secretaries of the HC Bar Associations at Srinagar and Jammu.

The state government told the SC that the shortfall in the drinking water requirement of the affected areas would be tackled within three days. The Bench acknowledged the relief work being done by the state and Central authorities.

However, the PIL petitioners disputed the official claims, prompting the Bench to set up the committee which would submit its interim report to both the HC and the SC. The Bench clarified that the PILs pending in the SC would not come in the way of the HC passing any order on similar petitions filed in the HC.
