Centre ready but work yet to begin
Building constructed three months ago; Civil Surgeon not aware Bharat Khanna Tribune News Service
Bathinda, September 17 The diagnostic centre in Bathinda was established by the state government to provide facility of 3-D ultra sound, MRI, CT scan, and echo-cardiology besides x-rays under the one roof here at the Civil Hospital. In July 2013, an MoU (memorandum of understanding) for the development of the radiology diagnostic centres in Punjab under the public- private partnership (PPP) was signed between Punjab Health Systems Corporation (Department of Health & FW, Punjab) and Humane Medicare Pvt Ltd (SPV of Parekh Alluminex Limited). The objective of this tie-up was to provide better diagnostic services to the people at cheaper rates. The then Punjab Health Minister Madan Mohan Mittal had maintained that with the implementation of the agreement, people would not be required to go to other areas for availing diagnostic services. He expressed hope that the step would further improve the health facilities in the state. The services would have also benefitted the doctors who would have better access to the diagnostic facilities. Under the scheme, Punjab has been bifurcated into three clusters under the first cluster district hospitals in Amritsar, Pathankot, Jalandhar and Kapurthala were taken. Under the second cluster, the district hospitals of Bathinda, Faridkot, Ferozepur, Mansa, Moga and Muktsar have been included and under the third cluster, the district hospitals of Fatehgarh Sahib, Ludhiana, Ajitgarh, SBS Nagar, Patiala, Ropar and Sangrur have been incorporated. In the second cluster of the district hospitals, the additional diagnostic facilities were supposed to include CT scans, DEXA and digital X-ray machines at Bathinda, Ferozepur, Mansa and Moga, MRI at Bathinda, 3D USG at Barnala, Bathinda (2), Faridkot, Ferozpur, Mansa and Muktsar, and Mammography units at Bathinda and Ferozepur. A number of patients visit the private centres to cardiology, x-rays, MRI and CT scan and have to pay the high price. Sources revealed that the private company that was supposed to run the centre in collaboration with the state government had left and now the authorities are finding a new company who could run it. All the rooms have been constructed at the new centre that had come up under the public-private partnership. A patient’s attendant at the Civil Hospital Amardeep Singh said, “An ultrasound and CT scan is the need of the hour that should be nearest or inside the Civil Hospital as the patient with head injuries or suspected of having such injuries is referred to a private for CT scan. The cost at the private hospitals is above Rs 5,000 whereas if the same is provided by the government, it could help the common and poor patients to get treatment. My brother was referred for a CT scan and we had to pay the high cost at private centre.” Chief Medical Officer, Bathinda, Tejwant Singh Randhawa, said, “I do not know where is the centre situated. I had joined only a few weeks ago. I will check why the centre has not started operating till now.” |
30 years on, traders add life to Ramlila
Bathinda, September 17 Usually, Ramlilas are staged during the Navratras up to the Ravan vadh and Lord Ram’s homecoming to be staged on the day of Dasehra but the Shri Krishna Dramatic Club has, for so many years broken the tradition and gone with their traders’ instinct. Prem Garg, who plays a major part in organising the Ramlila in Kikar Bazar said, “a majority of our 50-member team are traders and get very busy during the Navratras, which is followed by the festive season. Hence, we have been staging the Ramlila ahead of others to make sure that neither the members miss it nor do they suffer any financial loss since during the festive season the shops are open till late in the night.” The club also claims that while the common perception is that with hundreds of satellite channels, Internet and gaming systems at their disposal, the youngsters are losing interest in watching the Ramlila. Meanwhile their enactment has been luring an increasing number of audience every year. “We usually place 1,500 chairs for the audience. Not only all the chairs are occupied daily as many as 600 to 700 persons stand around the chairs to watch the staging of the Ramlila. People from as far as Thermal Colony and other areas come to watch our show. At night, when we stage the scene, wherein Hanuman brings Sanjeevani Booti for Lakshman, the audience crosses the 5,000 count since we use machinery to add aerial effects to the scene,” Garg adds. He further said that during the scene, Hanuman flies down from a height of 40-foot with the help of a rope, which was 300-foot long. The production costs a total of Rs 2.5 lakh. While the members pay Rs 2,100 each from their own pockets, Rs 50,000 is collected from the traders and shopkeepers of the market. Another Rs 50,000 is donated by the patron of this production, Chief Parliamentary Secretary Sarup Chand Singla and Rs 5,100 is donated by the chief guests who inaugurate the Ramlila every night. The USP of the production says a lot about the dedication of the members of the club. While Brij Mohan Shant has been directing the production since its first year, Chetan Sharma has been playing Ram for the past 15 years and the same is the case with the Punjabi film artist, Sarup Parinda, who has been playing the role of Manthra for the past 15 years. |
BDCA urges Dy CM to give back the cricket stadium land
Bathinda, September 17 It is pertinent to mention that even the cricket ground was prepared by the Bathinda Development Authority on the land. But recently, the government has proposed to construct a Fish Market on the land covering the prepared cricket ground. Members of the association today met Deputy Commissioner Dr Basant Garg and submitted a memorandum in the name of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal in which they have stated that since 1974, they had been carrying out their cricket activities in the ground of Rajindra College. The association had been running a cricket academy and the regional coaching centre sponsored by Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) from last more than eleven years. They have also stated that with the construction of AstroTurf at Rajindra College ground, their cricket activities have been discontinued as there was no other ground to the start their cricket activities. However, later they requested the Police Public School and the district police authorities to allow us to start the cricket activities in their ground temporarily for the time being, where their activities are going on temporary basis. General secretary of the Bathinda District Cricket Association (BDCA) stated: “We have been approaching the Deputy Commissioner and other authorities to allow us to prepare a cricket ground in the land which was allocated for the cricket stadium at the Dabwali Road in Bathinda.” He also told that the previous Deputy Commissioner KK Yadav had even assured them to provide the piece of land allocated for the cricket stadium and even the Bathinda Development Authority (BDA) prepared a cricket ground and central wicket and a tube well was also installed for watering the pitches and ground. But now, the government has proposed to construct a fish market on the land of cricket stadium, which is quite unfortunate. They also demanded that Deputy Chief Minister should look into the matter and save the ground for the development of the game of cricket in the district. It is worth mentioning that foundation stone to construct international cricket stadium here was laid on December 8, 2007 to mark the birthday of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) had promised a cricket stadium with facilities to host international matches here. Even the Bathinda Development Authority (BDA) also had spent Rs 12 lakh on preparing pitch and some other works on the ground. The stadium was to be
prepared on 25 acres with an estimated expenditure of about 100 crore. |

Outsiders squabble at college
Bathinda, September 17 A girl student said outsiders entered the college frequently and teased them. “The irony is that they are not stopped by the security guards,” she said. As per the eyewitnesses, some outsiders had come to meet a girl in the college canteen and there they entered into a scuffle with other outsiders. The bus stand police post officials said when they reached the spot, the accused fled and they had started the investigation. Vice-Principal Sukhraj Singh said he immediately rushed to the college gate after receiving the information gate but till then the accused had fled. “We immediately informed the police” he added. The clash has put a question mark on the security arrangements in the college. It is pertinent to mention here that though security guards have been deployed at the entrance of the college, they seldom check the people entering or leaving the college. Some months ago, the college had decided to reopen the girls’ canteen to ensure the safety of girl students and the staff members. The absence of a PCR van outside the college gives a free run to anti-social elements. The saving grace is the presence of the women armed special protection squad (WASPS) outside the college gate. |
MGNREGA, e-panchayat employees’ stir enters Day 3
Bathinda, September 17 The agitators raised slogans against the Punjab Government and the district administration. They also demanded that the government should regularise their jobs as they had been working for the past many years. Kirar Singh said 387 employees of their department had been suspended without any prior notice and were stopped for marking their attendance. They warned of intensifying their protest if the state government didn’t accept their demands. |
