Abohar

Couple commits suicide: Sunil Jat (25) and his wife Jyoti (23) allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday by consuming some insecticide at their house in Bewad Hamirvas village near Hanumangarh. The police said the victims got married on a couple of months ago. Further investigations were on.

Two killed in accident: Sonu (25) of 8SHPD village and Kailash (27) of 72RB village were killed when a tractor reportedly hit the motorcycle they were riding on the Sriganganagar-Suratgarh road on Tuesday night. The driver fled after the mishap, the police said.

Man commits suicide: Lakha Singh of Hiranwali village in Sriganganagar, Rajasthan, on Wednesday consumed an insecticide near his in-laws’ house in Gaddarkhera village. He was reportedly upset over registration of a case under the Dowry Prevention Act. The police said his wife Sharanjit Kaur had on Tuesday lodged a complaint under Section 498A alleging that he was a drug addict and had been demanding Rs 50,000 and a motorcycle from her.

College gets HC green signal: The Jaipur bench of the High Court on Wednesday directed the state to go ahead with the construction of the medical college at Sriganganagar. The writ petition was filed by Megh Raj Jindal Charitable Trust chief trustee and “guar king” Bajrang Dass Aggarwal.

Environment Day: Various events marked the Environment Day celebrations at the Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering and Technology (SSIET), here today. In poster-making, Rajinder Singh, Aadarsh and Sahil won the top three awards, while Varun, Simranjeet Kaur and Abid Hussain bagged the top awards in the declamation contest.

Rs 2.77 lakh stolen from car: A sum of Rs 2.77 lakh was stolen from the car of Manpreet Singh of Thablan village (Bassi Pathana) on Wednesday morning. A case has been registered.

Fazilka

5 hurt in roof collapse: Five members of a family, including a woman and a girl child, were injured when the roof of their adjacent houses collapsed on Wednesday in Hasta Kalan village of Fazilka district after a heavy rainfall. Those injured are Ait Singh (25), his brother Prem Singh (30), sisters Amro Bai (22) and Soma Bai (25) and latter’s daughter Charanjit (3).

Man held with poppy husk: The Fazilka police have nabbed a man with 25 kg poppy husk. Sources said the police had laid a barrier near Ghattianwali village and intercepted a motorcyclist, identified as Binder Singh of Pakka Seed Farm, Abohar. The accused tried to flee but the police party nabbed him after a chase. During the search, the police recovered 25 kg of poppy husk from the side bag of the motorcycle. Binder has been booked under the NDPS Act.

Freedom fighter cremated with state honours : Nonagenarian freedom fighter Des Raj Bhateja was cremated with full state honours here today. He was part of the freedom struggle during the Quit India Movement. A contingent of the Punjab Police gave a salute to the late freedom fighter.

Drug peddler arrested: The Phagwara police have arrested Rahul of Palahai Gate locality and seized 80 gm of intoxicant powder, a stolen gold chain and a motorcycle. The police said he was nabbed at a naka.

Ropar

2 booked for molestation bid: The police have booked two college students for allegedly trying to molest their classmate on Tuesday. The accused are pursuing B.Sc at the local government college. Kulbir Singh, Station House Officer, said the victim had alleged that the accused tried to molest her in front of the classroom, but other students came to her rescue. A case has been registered.

General Gill joins as PPSC Chairman:Lt Gen Tejwant Singh Gill (retd), who was sworn in as Chairman of the Punjab Public Service Commission yesterday by Punjab Governor Shivraj V Patil in Chandigarh, today took charge at the PPSC Headquarters here. However, since it was a government holiday today in Punjab, he left the city shortly after a brief introduction with those present in the office.

4 booked for duping students: Four persons were booked by the Gurgaon police for allegedly duping more than 12 students of around Rs 2 crore promising an assured MBBS seat in Uttar Pradesh. The accused have been identified as Arjun, Ajit Singh, Pritam and Dubi.

Woman commits suicide: A woman reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her in-laws house in Nawada village, Tuesday night. The police boo-ked the deceased woman, Nikku’s, husband and five others, on the complaint of her brother, Ravi.

Kurukshetra

Man gets 7-yr jail in drug case: Special judge MM Dhonchak on Wednesday sentenced Pritam Singh of Gumthala-Garhu village near Ismailabad in this district to seven years’ imprisonment for possessing 6-kg poppy straw. The court also imposed a fine of ~1.5 lakh on the convict. The Pehowa police had arrested Singh from Dera Pala Singh in Gumthala village on July 18 last year and seized the drugs from him. 

Panipat

Minor abducted: A minor was allegedly kidnapped by a youth identified as Abhimanyu of the Ekta Vihar colony on Tuesday. The girl’s uncle, Krishan Singh, said Abhimanyu had allegedly kidnapped her on the promise of marriage. A case was registered against Abhimanyu under Sections 363 and 366-A of the IPC .

Sirsa

Mobile sellers protest: Members of the Mobile Phones Sellers Association on Wednesday staged a demonstration protesting the alleged indifference of the police towards incidents of snatching and theft in the town. The mobile shop owners staged a dharna outside the police station and demanded the arrest of thieves.
