KYOTO: On the second day of his Japan tour, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today visited two prominent ancient Buddhist temples here — Toji and Kinkakuji — offering prayers and mingling with the common people and tourists.

Haryana, M'rashtra Assembly polls likely in October
NEW DELHI: The coming Assembly elections in four states are being delinked, with Maharashtra and Haryana likely to go to the polls first in the third week of October. The other two states — Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand — may witness elections in late December-early January.


Govt to increase DA to 107 pc
NEW DELHI: The government is likely to approve a hike in dearness allowance (DA) to 107 per cent from the existing 100 per cent, benefiting around 30 lakh Centre’s employees and its 50 lakh pensioners, including dependents. The previous UPA government had increased DA to 100 per cent from 90 per cent.

Setting the tone for their formal Summit on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe on Saturday spoke about a "strong and robust future" for the bilateral ties, with the Indian leader hoping that the two sides would strive to achieve in five years the unrealised potential of five decades.

Georgia leaves Punjabi farmers in lurch, denies visa to many

Kuldip Singh’s dream to till farms in far-off Georgia, situated on the east end of the Black Sea near Russia, has turned sour. He is not sure whether he will be able to visit that country again. Noted historian Bipan Chandra died this morning, leaving behind a world of memories for his students and a repertoire of top-class historiography for researchers. Chandra, 86, died at his Gurgaon home after a prolonged illness.
