New Delhi, August 11
A 42-year-old man was found dead at the official residence of former Union Minister and Congress leader Kumari Selja in New Delhi this morning. The victim who has been identified as Sanjay Chautala reportedly fell from the terrace of the bungalow at Moti Lal Nehru Marg and also had injury marks indicating signs of struggle, according to the police.

The police have registered a case of murder. They had detained 12 co-workers of the victim's wife, Manju, for questioning. Manju works as a maid at Selja's residence.

According to the victim's relatives, at least two of those detained allegedly had frequent fights with Sanjay over occupation of a servant quarter allotted to Manju.

The incident came to light at about 7.30 a.m. when Manju returned home from her brother's house where her family had gone to celebrate Rakhi on Sunday. A call was made to the police by one of Selja's staff members. A police team rushed to the spot and moved Sanjay's body to the nearby Lady Hardinge Hospital for a postmortem.

"The passage where the body was found is between the main residential building and the garden. It is at some distance away from the servants' quarter. The body had injuries caused by the fall as well as scratch marks on the neck, hands and back suggesting a struggle," said a senior police officer.

The officer added that blood stains were also found at the servants' quarter where Sanjay lived with his family.

Veena, Sanjay's sister-in-law said that he also had gone to Manju's brother's house at Lakshmi Bai Nagar for Rakhi, but had to return to his residence after being summoned by Selja's secretary.

"The call was made at about 10 p.m. and the caller insisted that Sanjay had to return 'under any circumstances'," said Veena. She added that the family had been asked to vacate the servants quarter by Sunday, but they had sought a day's extension.

Veena alleged that in the past month, Sanjay had several fights with Anil and Sanju who worked at Selja's residence as a cook and a laundryman. Both, along with ten others, have been detained by the police.

Man jumps from police station terrace, succumbs
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 11
A 29-year-old man allegedly jumped from the terrace of a three-storey police station in west Delhi and later succumbed to his injuries at a city hospital, after the police allegedly refused to file his complaint.

The deceased, Raju Narwal, had reached the Uttam Nagar police station to file a complaint against some individuals who had allegedly beaten him and also threatened to kill him, according to his family.

Raju was a resident of Kali Basti in Uttam Nagar. According to his family, he was called by a person at about 10 pm when he was outside his one-room house. At about 2.30 am, a police team went to his residence and informed his mother, Shanti Devi (55), that he was brutally beaten and was being treated at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital in west Delhi. When her eldest son, Mukesh Narwal (36), reached the hospital, he found that Raju had passed away.

He said that Raju's body had several injury marks and a plaster on one of his legs.

"The police told us that he had jumped from the terrace of the police station and landed on the front porch. But they have not told us the reason for my brother taking this extreme step," said Mukesh.

Investigating officers claimed that the deceased was in an inebriated state when he allegedly leapt from the terrace, but refused to specify what had transpired between the police and the deceased before he decided to kill himself.

Raju worked as a sweeper in west Delhi's Vikaspuri locality. His friend, Satish, said that Raju might have borrowed money from some "meat sellers" who are notorious in the area for allegedly running gambling rackets and they might be harassing him after he failed to return the money.

While the police are investigating the case, a magisterial inquiry is under way and will be investigating the family's allegations that Raju was mistreated.

A senior police officer however said, "Raju had come at around 11 pm and we made him sit there, because there were two other persons who had come to file their complaints. After a while, he climbed the terrace and jumped," said the officer, adding that Raju was heavily drunk when he took the step.
