U.S. aircraft hit Islamic State artillery in Iraq: Pentagon
WASHINGTON: U.S. military aircraft conducted an airstrike on Friday on Islamic State artillery used against Kurdish forces defending the city of Arbil, Iraq, near U.S. personnel, a Pentagon spokesman said. Two F/A-18 fighter jets dropped 500-pound laser-guided bombs on a mobile artillery piece near Arbil.

ISLAMABAD: A BSF jawan, who was swept away into Pakistan by strong currents of the Chenab river and picked up by Pakistan Rangers, today said he was treated "better" than his expectation and was looking forward to meeting his family.

Diesel, seed subsidy for drought-hit areas

The government today said a diesel subsidy for irrigation would be given to states where rainfall shortage was more than 50 per cent to protect the standing kharif crops.

Coal shortage in power plants grave
New Delhi, August 7
The government today said nearly half of the country’s coal- based power plants were facing fuel shortage and had stocks to last less than seven days as of July-end. In a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha, Power and Coal Minister Piyush Goyal said, “As on July 30, 2014... 46 thermal power plants (TPPs) were having critical coal stock of less than seven days, out of which 23 TPPs were having super critical coal stock of less than four days requirement.”

The Supreme Court today asked Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi to intervene in the dispute over the compensation amount to be paid to Himachal Pradesh by Punjab and Haryana for short supply of electricity from Bhakra and Beas power projects since 1966.
