Haryana should have followed Centre's directive: Solanki

New Delhi, July 26
Haryana Governor-designate Kaptan Singh Solanki today said he would explore all options to resolve the stand-off over creation of a separate gurdwara panel after assuming charge tomorrow.

Interacting with mediapersons at his official residence here, Solanki (75) - a Rajya Sabha MP from Madhya Pradesh - said his top priority would be to get the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee Act examined in accordance with the law but refused to set a time-limit.

Solanki denied that he was under instruction from the BJP Central leadership over the issue.

He, however, said the state government should have adhered to the directive by the Centre that the Governor must be asked to withdraw his assent to legislation paving the way for formation of the HSGMC. "Haryana should have obeyed Centre's directive", he said.

"The options available include reference of the Act to the President and obtaining opinion of the judiciary to ascertain its legality," said Solanki.

He said the state must not interfere in a religious matter. Citing the federal system in the country, he said, Haryana has the right to make laws on issues it has competency. In democracy challenges and disputes do arise, but they have to be resolved within the framework of law, said the Governor-designate.
