Ahead of PM visit, 3 intrusion bids in J-K

A day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's maiden visit to Jammu and Kashmir, the Army today foiled three intrusion bids in Poonch area in the last 24 hours.

A group of heavily armed terrorists tried to sneak into the Indian territory in Baloni-Sagra sub-sector along the Line of Control (LoC) on Wednesday night. "The intrusion was reported around 9.15 pm last night near the Roshini post. Alert troops of the 1st Mahar Regiment opened fire," said an Intelligence source.

"The terrorists, believed to be half-a-dozen and assisted by Pakistani troops, also fired mortars and rocket-propelled grenades. The gun battle continued till 5 am," said the source.

Troops of 5 Grenadiers and 6 Rajput Regiment also foiled two intrusion bids in Balakote sector on Wednesday night.

An Intelligence source said suspected ultras exchanged fire with the troops from around 10.30 pm to 12.30 am.

In Baloni-Sagra sub-sector, where the first intrusion attempt was made, additional reinforcements of troops from 37 and 39 Rashtriya Rifles, the Special Operations Group of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Poonch border police were rushed to the site.

Senior Army officers also flew off from here to the encounter site in Poonch. The Intelligence source informed that at 5.30 am today fresh firing broke out between the troops and the ultras that continued till 9 am. Later, a search operation was launched in the area to flush out the militants which was called off in the afternoon.

  • Infiltration attempts were reported in Poonch. Additional troops were rushed to the area and a massive search operation was launched to flush out militants
  • The Army has inputs of presence of three groups of 30 militants opposite Bufliaz, Balakote and Krishna Ghati sectors across the LoC which might try to infiltrate during Modi's visit
