Financial
crunch Sukhmeet Bhasin Tribune News Service
Bathinda, June 28 According to sources, the government has failed to set up the plastic park because of the financial crunch. Last year an announcement was made by the district administration that it has proposed to acquire 100 acre land at the Jassi Bagh Wali village to set up the plastic park but the process has not started yet. Raman Watts, president, Bathinda Chambers of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), said due to financial crunch the government has not yet started the plastic park project. He said the government has always claimed big but at the ground level nothing has been done so far. We have asked the district administration to arrange our meeting with refinery officials so that we can find business opportunity and set up some small industry there. Chaman Lal, district general manager, Industries and Commerce Department, said we had a proposal last year to acquire 100 acres of land at Jassi Bagh Wali but we did not get any reply from the government. This refinery is a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and Mittal Energy, a subsidiary of ArcelorMittal. It has the capacity to produce 4 lakh tonnes per annum of polypropylene. According to the HMEL officials, Punjab has the potential to attract an investment of Rs 3,000-4,000 crore in polypropylene-based downstream industries. It was also the dream project of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal to set up downstream petroleum industry near refinery and make Bathinda the petroleum hub. |
