Narendra Modi, Prime minister, on twitterNew Delhi, May 30
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today opposed the decision of the Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh governments to include a chapter on his life and achievements in school textbooks.

A day after news reports surfaced over the possible move, Modi said he firmly believed that the life story of living individuals should not be included as part of the school curriculum. He said: “Young minds should read about several stalwarts who made the country what it is today and emulate them.”

Modi tweeted: “Am reading in the news that some states want to include Narendra Modi’s life struggles as a part of school curriculum. I firmly believe that the life story of living individuals should not be included as a part of the school curriculum. India has a rich history of several stalwarts who made India what it is today. Young minds should read about these greats & emulate them.”

Gujarat Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said he received a call from Modi stating that it was not appropriate to include life and events of a living person in school syllabus and asked him not to go ahead with it. Chudasama said: “I told Narendra bhai that his wish is like a command. I assured him that the state government will not go ahead with the project.”

The Madhya Pradesh Minister of State for School Education told reporters in Bhopal that the state government would not include Modi’s biographical sketch in school books as suggested by the Prime Minister.
