Punjab DGP Saini to resume duty today

Chandigarh, May 19
Sumedh Singh Saini will resume his duty as the Punjab DGP tomorrow. The orders reinstating him as the DGP were issued by the state Home Department tonight.

Suresh Arora, who served as the state DGP during the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections after Saini was forced to proceed on leave on April 2, would assume charge as the DGP-cum-Chief Director of the Vigilance Bureau, said Principal Secretary, Home, SS Channy.

Both orders were issued today after the model code of conduct ended. Saini’s leave was till May 20, but he would join a day earlier, Channy said.

Saini was forced to proceed on leave after former Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira repeatedly complained to the EC, seeking Saini’s removal on the ground that he was chargesheeted by a special CBI court in November 2006 for kidnapping and disappearance of three persons. — TNS
