Residents not to allow dumping
of garbage at trenching ground
Dehradun, May 11 The residents said the fire was the result of the burning of garbage by workers of the Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC). DS Bhatia, president of Hill View Apartments, said they had signed a memorandum of understanding with the DMC in February against the burning of garbage at the trenching ground. “It was decided that garbage will not burnt there. The step was taken to prevent discomfort to the area residents. However, the DMC has violated the MoU,” Bhatia added. “Despite repeated requests no DMC or district administration official visited the area to assess the situation. They sent a fire engine which failed to control the fire. We will launch a protest and stop DMC trucks from dumping garbage at the trenching ground,” said Bhatia. Meanwhile, Additional Mukhya Nagar Adhikari Harshvardhan Mishra has denied the allegations. “Why we will burn the garbage. It is possible that some DMC workers might have thrown a cigarette or biddi at the trenching ground that may have caused the fire,” he added. |

Idealism of Abbas days missing today: Guv
Dehradun, May 11 The celebrations have been organised by the Khwaja Ahmad Abbas Centenary Celebrations Committee of which the Governor is the
chairman. The committee has also held celebrations in Aligarh, Delhi and Hyderabad. The Governor said had Abbas been alive today, he would certainly have questioned the political and social set-ups. Abbas did a lot of his writing during the freedom struggle when intellectuals had a difficult time, he added. Dr Syeda Hameed, Member of the Planning Commission, said Abbas loved the hill region of Uttarakhand and had written a short story titled "Mussoorie 1954" . She added it
was extremely important that the youth of today became aware of Abbas's life and
works. "He was the voice of the marginalised people and used simple Urdu in his writings," she said, adding that for him the cinema was a vehicle to convey socially relevant messages. Member of Parliament DP Tripathi said Abbas believed in equality and there was immense humanism in his personality. "Abbas was a rare example of a writer, dramatist, film-maker, journalist, screen play writer, biographer and was perfect in all these spheres," he added. Theatre and film actor Atul Tiwari from the National School of
Drama said Abbas shaped the cinema, literature and journalism of India and had thus contributed greatly to the nation. Aloke B Lal, retired DGP and cultural adviser to the Governor, proposed a vote of thanks. A multimedia presentation on Abbas's life was presented by Hamari Urdu Mohabbat. UPES Chancellor Dr SJ Chopra ,Vice-Chancellor of Doon University and UTU Prof V K Jain, Vice-Chancellor of Sanskrit University Prof Mahavir Aggarwal, Dr Chhaya Shukla, a member of the State Public Service Commission, students and teachers of mass

POLITICAL DIARY
Dehradun, may 11 He was brought in as Chief Minister in place of Vijay Bahuguna on February 1 with an view to improving the sagging fortunes of the Congress in the state. The Congress-led state government had been criticised for its alleged poor handling of the situation post-natural disaster. There were allegations of inaction and failure to respond quickly to the disaster in which more than 5,000 pilgrims, tourists and locals lost their lives. The entire economy of the Garhwal region, which was
dependent on the Char Dham yatra, was paralysed with thousands of people losing their hearths and homes, besides the source of
livelihood. Harish Rawat was made Chief Minister to galvanise the state government machinery as well as the party organisation to meet the challenges of the Lok Sabha elections. Rawat started on a positive note and took more than 3,000 decisions in a short span of about a month before the model code of conduct for the elections came into force. A successful rally addressed by Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi in February also boosted the morale of party workers throughout the state. However, the decision of Satpal
Maharaj, sitting Pauri Garhwal MP, to join the BJP and an under current in favour of BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi made Harish Rawat's job tougher. Harish Rawat's prestige was also at stake from the Haridwar seat which he represents in the Lok
Sabha. This time his wife Renuka Rawat was given the Congress ticket to contest against former BJP Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal
Nishank. The BJP had fielded three former Chief Ministers, namely Major Gen BC Khanduri
(retd), Bhagat Singh Koshiyari and Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank in the elections.
Harish Rawat made all out efforts and campaigned aggressively and vigorously for the party candidates.
He is hopeful that the people of the state, particularly in the Haridwar constituency, would appreciate the work done by his government and would vote
for the Congress. Interestingly, there is also speculation of threat to the stability of the state government in case the BJP comes to power at the
Centre. The state government is banking on the support of the seven legislators belonging to the Progressive Democratic Front
(PDF). In case the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) headed by Narendra Modi as Prime Minister forms government at the
Centre, some legislators, who owe their allegiance to Satpal Maharaj, could shift loyalties. But Harish Rawat has scotched such
rumours.
