19 die as train derails in M’rashtra

Mumbai, May 4
At least 19 persons were killed and 132 injured when the engine and four coaches of the Diva-Sawantwadi passenger train derailed between Nagothane and Roha railway stations, around 120 km from Mumbai, this morning.

The mishap occurred just outside a tunnel near Nidhi village around 9.40 am. Rescue teams used cutters to extricate some of the injured and remove dead bodies from the mangled coaches. The Raigad district police said they were still in the process of identifying those killed in the accident. Konkan Railway officials said the train services on the route had been suspended after the accident.

Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh for those killed and Rs 50,000 for those seriously injured in the accident. Those with minor injuries would get Rs 10,000 each. 

Probe ordered

* The Railway Ministry has ordered an inquiry into the train derailment

* Commissioner, Railway Safety, Chetan Bakshi is likely to conduct the inquiry
