Cong showcases unity at Hooda’s roadshow

Tribune News Service

Yamunanagar, March 23
Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s roadshow has made Congress men of various factions come together to show unity, at least for the time being.

Many leaders of former Ambala MP Kumari Selja’s group, including Rajpal Bhukri, MLA from Sadhaura (Reserved) Assembly constituency in Yamunanagar district, were seen in the roadshow here today.

The roadshow, which was taken out in favour of Congress candidate from Ambala (Reserved) parliamentary constituency, Raj Kumar Valmiki, covered several towns and villages of the district, including Sadhaura, Bilaspur, Chhachhruali, Jagadhri and Yamunanagar.

Bhukri had missed no opportunity to criticise the Chief Minister during the last four-and-a-half years. Political observers said the support of Selja’s group to the Chief Minister might bring major relief to the Congress candidate as the Selja group had a stronghold in this district.

“No Congress candidate can succeed here without the support of the Selja group. The arrival of this group in the roadshow of the Chief Minister is a positive sign in favour of the party candidate,” said a political observer.

Enthusiastic at the gathering of Congress men in the roadshow, Hooda said the Congress would repeat history and win all 10 seats of the state. In the last two elections, Selja had defeated Ratan Lal Kataria of the BJP.

Black flags no deterrent for Kejriwal
Seeks support for Yogendra Yadav in Mewat
Tribune News Service

Gurgaon, March 23
Undeterred by the black flags in Faridabad yesterday, Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal, whose roadshow reached the city today, pompously claimed that if people wanted a corruption-free life, then AAP was the only choice they had.

Out to seek support for Yogendra Yadav, Kejriwal went to Mewat and then to Gurgaon asking people to unite against both the Congress and the BJP and choose a common man. "It is shocking to see huge malls in Gurgaon which is a few kilometres away from Mewat, where agriculture is still rain-fed. Political honchos of both the Congress and the BJP talk of foreign investments and education, while thousands of children are yet to get access to government schools. Its time common man unites and chooses one among themselves to solve their problems. Please don't divide your valuable votes among the parties that bear different names and flags but have same motives. If there is inflation in the country, it is for everyone. Let us vote for AAP and ask others also to do so,” said Kejriwal.

When questioned about resentment against AAP displayed during a roadshow in Faridabad, Kejriwal said it was an unsuccessful attempt by rivals to mar his image.

“We have support of people and it is evident from the large number of people who attended our roadshow. People waited for us even when we got late. We stayed back in Ghasera village where a political leader had hardly ever stayed,” added Kejriwal.

Kiran discharged, claims Dharambir, his brother behind attack
Tribune News Service

Bhiwani, March 23
Haryana minister and MLA from Tosham Assembly segment Kiran Choudhry, who was injured in stone throwing during canvassing for her daughter and Bhiwani-Mahendragarh Congress nominee Shruti Choudhry, hit out at BJP candidate Dharambir Singh today, holding him and his brother responsible for the attack.

Addressing a press conference here after she was discharged from hospital, Kiran alleged that Dharambir wanted to create terror in the constituency to intimidate voters.

"We are acquainted with his violent tactics. I was informed by my security personnel that two or three persons had been hovering around me during campaigning during the last few days and had raised slogans in favour of Dharambir. I chose to ignore them. The electorate will teach such politicians a lesson in the elections," she said, alleging that the attack was a bid on her life.

Alleging that Dharambir had a history of indulging in such tactics, she alleged that the Election Commission had pointed fingers at him in 1987 for his involvement in an untoward incident in polling. She criticised state BJP chief Ram Bilas Sharma, stating that he had advocated the party ticket for the person involved in an incident of arson at his house in 1997.

The MLA stated that she had apprised the Chief Minister about Dharambir's activities when he was Congress MLA for the last nine years. "I got him evicted from Bhiwani district in 2009 when he was denied the ticket from Badhra and was shifted to Sohna in Gurgaon. I knew how to deal with such elements," she said.

Gurgaon: Kiran Choudhry, who was admitted to a hospital here following the attack at Narnaul on March 19, was discharged on Sunday. While leaving the hospital, she accused her political rival Dharambir Singh of trying to eliminate her. She alleged that he was behind the attack.

"I am thankful to both God and doctors for saving me, otherwise my rivals had made complete arrangements for killing me. I was there for my daughter and Dharambir Singh, the BJP candidate from Bhiwani-Mahendragarh, and his brother were responsible for the attack," she said.

"The moment I started addressing the people, a stone was thrown straight at me. When I warned some suspicious elements present that we will not tolerate hooliganism, they went out of control and threw many stones specifically aimed at me," she added.

AAP activists 'insult' Tricolour
Members refute charges, say flag had accidentally fallen on ground
Ravinder Saini
Tribune News Service

Dhaaruhera (Rewari), March 23
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) activists reportedly insulted the national flag by putting it on the ground at the Bhagat Singh chowk here today. When some people and mediapersons raised objection, the activists got infuriated and reportedly misbehaved with them.

The incident took place some time before the arrival of Aam Aadmi Party national convener and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal here for his roadshow. The row was resolved after Kejriwal’s intervention, who reportedly felt sorry about the incident.

Kejriwal was to garland the statue of Bhagat Singh during his roadshow here. The AAP activists, carrying national flags, were decorating the statue with flowers for the ceremony. In the meantime, someone reportedly put the Tricolour on the ground under the statue, which was later spotted by the people and mediapersons.

On the other hand, the Aam Aadmi Party activists clarified that they had not insulted the flag. It had fallen on the ground when the activists were sprucing up the statue.

“The flag was later lifted from the ground with full honour, hence the allegation of insulting the flag is totally baseless,” they said.

Later, Kejriwal, while addressing the gathering at the Dhaaruhera chowk in Rewari town, called upon the people to prevent both the parties from coming to power for making India a corruption-free nation. He said the prices of essential commodities would increase manifold if the parties came to power in the Lok Sabha elections.

He claimed no development had taken place in Gujarat by the Modi-led government. “I have been there (Gujarat) and found no development. Modi is fooling the people of the country on the issue of development,” said Kejriwal.

"Do not see the community to which the candidate belongs. See what he can can do for you. I warn you that if you are voting for the INLD, you are voting for the BJP. It will give you nothing but indifference," he said.

Kejriwal and his team reached the Meo-dominated village of Gandhi Gram Ghasera, 35 km from Gurgaon, around 11 pm last night. Yogendra Yadav, he and others spent the night at the 'chaupal' or community centre with some locals.

Women up against liquor, money distribution
Ravinder Saini
Tribune News Service

Jhajjar, March 23
Although the Election Commission of India (ECI) is making efforts to check money and liquor distribution in the approaching Lok Sabha elections, a group of women have also taken up the cudgels against this prevalent practise to restrain politicians from influencing the voters through illegal means.

Under the aegis of the Akhil Bhartiya Mahila Shakti Manch, a social outfit working for women empowerment in the state, has launched a special campaign, wherein they are organising women’s meetings and taking out processions to motivate the women against these ‘illegal’ offerings.

Santosh Dahiya, chief of the manch, told The Tribune that illegal practice like money and liquor distribution during the poll season could not be curbed entirely by only enacting laws and issuing the guidelines.

“The ECI is taking all essential steps to prevent the use of money and liquor in the elections, but it is important to make the people aware of the evils of the practise and uproot it. Keeping this in mind, we have launched this campaign to educate people, especially women, against such illegal practises,” said Santosh.

She said the women activists would go door-to-door to spread the message among women.

On being asked why only women had been selected for the campaign, Santosh said, “Since women usually stay indoors and know the tendency of their family members, they can turn out to be instrumental in stopping the corrupt practise to a large extent.”

Tanwar, who was addressing a gathering after opening his election office at Ratia in Fatehabad today, said the way the BJP and its alliance partner Haryana Janhit Congress had to accommodate candidates rejected by the Congress, people had come to know that the Modi wave was merely a hype created by the saffron party.

The Congress leader said the INLD would not be able to win a single seat in the state, as people were not going to votes for it with tainted leaders this time.

Tanwar said ever since he was elected an MP from Sirsa, development projects worth Rs 40,000 crore had come to his constituency.

He said Rs 23,500-crore nuclear power project that was launched by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Gorakhpur in Fatehabad under the Sirsa parliamentary seat in January would improve the economy of the area.

Reminding the gathering of the bypoll held in Ratia two years ago, Tanwar said the Congress gave the INLD and the BJP a crushing defeat, as people voted for the development works done by the UPA government at the Centre and the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government in Haryana.

Tanwar also organised an ‘akhand path’ to mark the opening of his office situated on the Sardulgarh crossing in Ratia.

Ratia MLA Jarnail Singh and senior party leaders Jaipal Singh Lali, Subhash Bishnoi, Kirti Jain, Rishikesh Garg, Bhawani Singh and Lekhraj Lali were present.

Dhankhar to resurface ‘chaudhar’ issue
Ravinder Saini
Tribune News Service

Jhajjar, March 23
Apart from other pertinent issues like corruption and rising inflation, ‘chaudhar’ (supremacy) has yet again surfaced as a vital poll issue in the Rohtak parliamentary constituency. It is being prominently raised by BJP nominee and farmers’ leader Om Parkash Dhankhar in his poll campaigning.

It is the same issue which was raised by the Congress in the constituency in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections to garner support. People always responded in favour to the Congress nominee (except in the 1999 poll).

No one can contest the fact that the issue had played a decisive role in the victory of then Congress nominee and present Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda in three Lok Sabha elections held in 1996, 1998 and 2004. However, it failed to work in the 1999 elections due to the Kargil wave in the favour of the BJP.

The issue became the secondary and dispensable in the constituency after 2004 when Hooda-led Congress government took over Haryana in 2005. Since then, two Lok Sabha elections (bypoll in 2005 and 2009) have so far been conducted, wherein Congress nominee Deepender Hooda sought votes for the development and romped home victorious both the times.

This time too, Deepender is in the poll fray as a Congress candidate and is again seeking vote and support of locals in the name of development works carried out by him in the constituency during his successive stints.

But the issue of ‘Chaudhar’ has been resurfaced by the BJP candidate Om Prakash Dhankhar in the ongoing poll season.

The barefoot baba does not have a penny in his name and deposited his security amount from the collection that he received from his followers.

He is determined to change the system and want to make India the world king. Although he contested the last parliamentary elections, he got only 1,675 votes and could not win.

He has not taken bath for 15 years and has also undergone ‘tapasya’ in a ‘kutia’ at Sonali Kalan village. He said his mission was to uproot corruption and usher in a new era of harmony, development, prosperity and peace.

Wearing 12 garlands of ‘rudaraksh’, Shiv Parsad is anguished at the pathetic condition people are living in. “I am fighting for religion and to save the country from the clutches of hypocrites who are fooling the people and looting them in the name of caste, creed and religion.”

He says, “I am sure of winning the elections because it is the will of god. This will motivate people to vote for me.”

He says it is degradation of moral values that has turned a prosperous, spiritual and culturally diverse country into a divided nation of greedy and immoral people.

“If I win the elections and come to power, I will make a giant temple and will also perform a massive ‘yagna’ for world peace,” he added.

For we did not get any help, we made our own groups to deal with our day-to-day problems. It was then that we realised that if we had to change our lives,” said Fatima Begum, who runs a group dealing with water crisis in her village.

"I faced a lot of criticism from my family and village when I joined politics, but things have changed now," said Akbari, a panchayat member from Pinguava village of the Punhana constituency.

Mohammadi Mewati from Bondh village of the Firozpur Jhirka assembly segment was the only delegate invited to represent her block during the Haryana Pradesh

Bhagat has earlier contested Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in 2009 but failed to get enough votes. He was then dismissed as just another “publicity seeker” and forgotten within days. But he has surprised everyone this time again by filing his nomination.

"I am not fighting for power. All I am trying to do is to make a difference in lives of thousands like me. I have regularly voted in hope of a better future, but it never happened so I have to jump into the poll fray,” said Bhagat.

Hailing from Madhubani in Bihar, he lives in the city with his wife and three children.

"I do not make big promises, but education is my top priority. Children of common man cannot afford to schools of their choices because of higher fees structure and status quotient. If I get support from locals and get the chance to represent them in the Lok Sabha, I will fight for quality affordable education for the children. I will put an end to the system of admission fees, which is charged by schools annually, he said.

Bhagat has declared assets worth Rs 1.5 lakh. He owns a Nano car and a motorcycle. His wife holds assets worth Rs 20,000. In his last affidavit filed in 2009, Bhagat had declared total assets worth Rs 34,000.
