No poll rallies at Anandpur Sahib Hola
Mohalla: EC Chandigarh, March 12 Assistant Returning Officer-cum-SDM of Anandpur Sahib Amarjit Bains has sent a letter to the manager of Gurdwara Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib, asking him not to allot any SGPC-owned space to any party for holding political rallies during the festival. In case any space has already been allotted, the political party concerned should be told that it should not use it for any political activity, the Assistant Returning Officer has said. “Political parties are free to hold religious congregations and other related activities there, but the occasion will not be allowed to be used for election campaigning,” said an official of the Chief Electoral Office here. The official said the Deputy Commissioner, who is also the Returning Officer for the Anandpur Sahib Lok Sabha constituency, had been told to videograph all conferences taking place there. Action would be initiated if any political party was found violating the model code of conduct, the official said. Conferences are scheduled to be held at Anandpur Sahib on March 16. Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Partap Singh Bajwa sent a written representation to VK Singh urging him to stop the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) from holding any political conference at the gurdwara complex on March 16.Congress MP from Anandpur Sahib Ravneet Singh Bittu, who is contesting the Lok Sabha election again from the constituency, also submitted a representation to the CEO against allowing political rallies at the holy place. A Congress delegation led by Surjit Singh Swaich and Pritam Singh Bhatti also met the CEO today in that connection. VK Singh said district officials had been told to monitor conferences during Hola Mohalla and submit the report in that regard. He said at this stage, he could not speculate what action would be taken against anyone found violating the guidelines. Another official said the Election Commission could take the services of an independent evaluator to make an estimate of the expenditure incurred on any political conference and include that amount in the poll expenditure of the candidate concerned.
