Now, teachers break pots
Bathinda, March 7 The union has been protesting to get salaries for the 44 days when they had observed a pen-down strike. Apart from that, they also want the government to draft a policy regarding regularisation of their jobs. "While the SSA/ RMSA/ CSS teaching staff, which is not regular, is being given salaries according to the revised pay scale since April 2013, the non-teaching staff was not considered for the hike. Even though 65 per cent of the burden of our salaries is borne by the Central Government, it can implement a hike in our salaries only if the state government agrees to pay its 35 per cent. We will keep holding protests till the time our demands are not met," said Deepak Bansal, district president of the union. |

Women wield financial power here
Bathinda, March 7
"The basic idea was to empower women and create an atmosphere where women beneficiaries can walk in conveniently," said the bank manager Suman Gupta, who has 32 years of experience in banking. The bank currently has nine employees including officers, clerical staff and the guard. Of these nine, five are women and four are men. The female staff includes assistant manager Kadambri Bhatt, who also happens to be the youngest of all employees. Besides it there is Anju Aggarwal deputed at single window, Meena Mahajan as the head cashier and clerical staff member Ritu Sharma. Having worked amongst the men, Suman finds that a female banker is able to connect to female customer at a better wavelength. Strategically located in a residential area, the branch also has an edge over its counterparts located in busy commercial markets, as women can just walk in here when convenient. This perhaps explains the reason why none of the 200 lockers at the branch is available for public use. Unlike at other branches, wherein women customers are accompanied by male relatives for operating lockers, women come here all alone too. Being mothers and daughters-in-law themselves, the female bankers understand the women's itch to save in a better way. "We have women customers who wish to make savings away from prying eyes of their families. Though the amounts are small but gives immense pride for the women to know that she has money of her own," says Suman Gupta. The bank now envisages to increase number of staff members in sync with the increasing customers. |
Making way through city roads, minds

"After my husband taught me driving, I dwelled upon the fact that there must be a large number of women yearning to learn driving but have not been able to do so, either because the male members in their family don't have enough time or they are shy of being in company of a male trainer," said Krishna. "Soon after I learnt driving, I opened the institute to help other women do so. Although boys and men also come to learn, I let other trainers at the institute train them since I focus only on female clients. With me, they don't hesitate from asking something twice and are also comfprtable when I help them change gears or hold the steering firmly," she said. Apart from the fact that she has freed several women from dependence of male family members to take them to market and other places, she feels joyous about the fact that she has been working towards breaking the common perception that women cant' drive well. "If you see the statistics and compare the number of male/female drivers with the number of accidents, you would find that a much higher number of male drivers are involved in accidents the world over. While women drive with confidence, men drive with over confidence," she said with a smile. Krishna also states that initially she also had to fight the stigma of being a female trainer. "While no one in my family has any issue with me giving training, people used to question my abilities as a trainer since I am a woman. But with my work over the years, I have silenced all my critics and now their wives and daughters are learning from me," she said. "I give lessons from 9 am to 1 pm and then from 3 to 7pm, between the two sessions, I spend time with my family. My sons (17 and 13 years old) are also proud of the work I am doing. They also like the fact that when we go out I also take turn to drive the family car," she said. |
