Kejri’s detention sparks AAP-BJP clashes
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 5
In retaliation to the detention of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal in Gujarat, workers of his party clashed with BJP activists outside the BJP headquarters at Ashoka Road in New Delhi today. The police used batons and water cannons to disperse the crowd.

Similar incidents were also reported from Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. BJP workers allegedly thrashed AAP workers while they were holding a demonstration outside the BJP office in Lucknow.

Kejriwal, who is on a four-day election campaign in Gujarat, was detained for some time, apparently to ease traffic while his convoy was heading towards Bhuj.

“My detention shows that Modi is rattled by my presence. The orders have come from the top,” Kejriwal said after he was released.

Kejriwal later urged his party workers to maintain calm and refrain from violence. “You should be prepared to lay down your life, but never raise hand,” he tweeted.

In Delhi, AAP workers, led by their leaders Shazia Ilmi and Ashutosh, had gathered outside the BJP office to express resentment over Kejriwal’s detention in Gujarat.

Some chairs were thrown at them from the BJP office and soon the workers of both parties were seen hurling stones at each other. Many persons were injured in the incident. The police detained 32 protesters indulging in violence. “We have detained 32 of them and a legal action will be taken against them,” a Delhi Police official said.

AAP leader Shazia Ilmi said, “Our volunteers were peacefully protesting against Kejriwal’s detention.

Perhaps, sloganeering against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi angered BJP workers.”

Ashutosh said: “Both the Congress and the BJP are conniving against AAP as they are scared of us. Wait and watch what happens next.”

Party leader Prashant Bhushan said raising uncomfortable questions related to the “so-called” Gujarat development model of Modi had left the BJP jittery.
