New Delhi, February 18
Amid tumultuous scenes and a ‘blackout’ of TV proceedings, the Lok Sabha on Tuesday approved carving out of Telangana, which after the Rajya Sabha nod will become the 29th state of the country.

3 Rajiv killers escape gallows
SC commutes death to life term
New Delhi, February 18
The Supreme Court today reduced to life sentence the death penalty awarded to three convicts, Santhan, Murugan and Perarivalan, for their role in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, citing the 11-year delay in the disposal of their mercy pleas.

Chandigarh, February 18
The Shiromani Akali Dal today announced six candidates for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. Sitting MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal has been re-nominated from Bathinda, while Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa has been fielded from Sangrur again. Prem Singh Chandumajra, who was fielded from Patiala last time, has been shifted to Anandpur Sahib this time. Pawan Kumar Tinoo has been nominated from Jalandhar, while Kulwant Singh will be the party nominee from Fatehgarh Sahib.

Italy on Tuesday “recalled” its envoy Daniele Mancini for consultations and summoned Indian Ambassador Basant Kumar Gupta following “unacceptable” delay in trying two Italian marines accused of killing two Indian fishermen off the Kerala coast in February 2012.

LoC trade to resume tomorrow
Srinagar, February 18
India and Pakistan today decided to resume the stalled cross-Line of Control (LoC) trade on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad route from Thursday. Officers of the two sides today met at Zero Point in Uri sector, 125 km from Srinagar, and resolved the impasse.

Punjab pesticide ‘poisoning’ victims await justice
Bathinda, February 18
Joginder Kaur (60), who has lost her husband and younger son to pesticides used in the fields, prays every day that her only surviving son does not die before her. With no land of their own, she and her son work as farm hands and spray pesticides to make both ends meet. Her husband and younger son also had the same job: spraying pesticides for years.
