The ruling National Conference (NC)-Congress alliance in Jammu and Kashmir is in big trouble, with credible reports that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah may step down following sharp differences over the creation of new administrative units.

SC refuses to review verdict criminalising gay sex
New Delhi, January 28
The Supreme Court today reaffirmed the validity of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), under which sexual acts among LGBTs (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender population) are a criminal offence attracting a maximum punishment of life sentence.

Ponty case: Murder charge against 21 dropped
New Delhi, January 28
A Delhi court has dropped murder charge against all 21 accused in the shootout case involving liquor baron Ponty Chadha and his younger brother Hardeep. The accused included sacked Uttarakhand minorities panel chief Sukhdev Singh Namdhari. The court added offence of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the alleged main conspirator Namdhari and his personal security officer Sachin Tyagi.

The Supreme Court today decided to hear in an open court a plea for commuting the death penalty awarded to Devender Pal Singh Bhullar in the 1993 bomb attack case.

‘Biggest’ naval exercise in Feb

In what will be the biggest-ever military exercise hosted by India, 16 foreign countries will participate in the Naval exercise “Milan-2014” off the coast of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The 17th country will be India.

Defence Research and Development Organisation will test the “containerised” version of Agni-5 intercontinental ballistic missile later this year, with user trials by the armed forces scheduled for the end of the next year.

RBI ups interest rates, lending costs may rise
New Delhi, January 28
The cost of borrowing for consumers and corporates may go up as the RBI  surprised today with a 25 basis points increase in key interest rates unleashing, in the process, a sharply focused battle against high consumer inflation which has been corroding household budgets. This was an 8 for 8 policy as the RBI increased the short-term lending (repo) rate to 8 per cent from 7.75 per cent and set a path for achieving a 8 per cent consumer inflation target by January next year.
