Now, Haryana policemen threaten stir

Hisar, November 15
After two days of ‘chakka jam’ by Haryana Roadways employees, Haryana police personnel are gearing up to step up their agitation in support of their demands. They have rejected the interim relief and risk allowance announced for them by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda at the November 10 rally in Gohana.

The sources informed that the Haryana Police Sangthan (HPS), a representative body of police personnel up to the ranks of retired inspector, has been mobilising support by holding close door meetings to raise the issue again.

The police personnel had earlier staged symbolic protests. They had observed a fast on August 15 without boycotting duty. They had observed Black Diwali to express resentment on the issue. They had also submitted representations to the CM, MPs and MLAs, demanding pay scales on par with their counterparts in the neighbouring states of Punjab and Himachal and Chandigarh. Rajender Singh Tomar, president of constable and head constable association (a unit of the HPS comprising serving cops), said they had rejected the offer of risk allowances and interim relief. They had given several representations to the government regarding their demands which were still unattended.

Terming the relief of Rs 2,000 and risk allowance of Rs 5,000 as a joke, HPS president Dilawar Singh said their main demand was revision of their basic pay scale equivalent to their counterparts in the neighbouring states.

“We reject the relief announced and would continue to raise our demand for revised pay scale. The police is a disciplinary force. Thus, we will not resort to the tactics adopted by other employees. But we will not remain silent to the unfair treatment meted out to us”, Dilawar Singh said, adding that they had decided to hold a state level meeting in Ambala or Gurgaon next week in which they would take some strong decisions.

He said that they had been getting almost half the salaries as compared to their counterparts in the neighbourhood. A constable in Punjab got around Rs 28,000 while his Haryana counterpart was getting below Rs 15,000 per month as salary, he said.
