beginnings, drug store discoveries and six-figure deals lure thousands of young people into the arclights of the modelling world. And from there to films is just a step away for the lucky ones. But when stars start applying the reverse gear to their careers and begin making forays into the world of modelling, then it is time to think: Why have a number of the current actors and actresses begun going back to the plank which they so successfully used to launch themselves into films?

’Art & Soul
India: Observed & perceived
The recent exhibition of engravings and etchings in Washington reveals an India, which to the British and Europeans of the 19th century, was bizarre, wondrous, freakish, fantastic and exotic

time ago, a European friend described to me — unfortunately, I never saw it myself — a print that he had seen in a book on early travels in India, showing a group of five headless ‘Indians’ seated huddled on a mud terrace under a tree. It was intended to illustrate the text that spoke of an Indian panchayat: a village body that was ‘headless’. Clearly, what the text might have intended to say — we don’t know for certain — that all members of the body were equal.

Tame the lipids
Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance, vital for the human body. But abnormally high levels of it can pose a serious risk to the heart
Mickey Mehta
India today is at an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases or heart diseases. Earlier it was assumed that either chronic diabetes or hypertension were major culprits but many recent studies show that abnormally high cholesterol levels are equally to be blamed. If a lipid profile test was performed at least 50 per cent of the individuals would have high blood cholesterol levels and some 30 per cent would be at borderline or at an increased risk of the same.

pilots of the Indian Air Force have had a long-standing affair with the C-130 Hercules, dating back to the 1962 conflict with China. As India built up forces in NEFA and Ladakh in early November 62' to brace up for a second Chinese assault, the IAF pushed in all their An-12s, Packets and Dakotas to lift troops, tanks and guns into the war zones. Assisting them in this herculean airlift effort were a few C-130s of the USAF, the mainstay of the USAFs medium-lift capability.

On the banks of Krishna
Vijayawada is an important railway junction on the Delhi-Chennai route. It is a delightful combination of modernity and tradition

the aircraft turns around to descend, one can see rice fields down below. Patches of beautiful water laden fields with young, green sprouts raising their heads above the standing waters nodded a hearty welcome. The airport at Vijayawada only reiterates the mood. It is such a tiny building that you feel you are back in the 1960s when Delhi’s Safdarjang airport looked much the same. As you venture into the city of Vijayawada, it keeps the promise the rice fields and the old fashioned airport made to you — it is a delightful combination of modernity and traditional areas awaiting development.
