Woman dies after delivery
Chandigarh, November 7
A 22-year-old woman died 12 hours after delivering a baby at Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, this morning. While the family did not move any complaint with the hospital authorities, it requested for a postmortem after filing a complaint with the police, suspecting medical negligence. The woman was admitted to the hospital on November 4.

Road accidents claim two lives
Chandigarh, November 7
Two persons, including a woman, died in two road accidents in the city during the past 24 hours. While a woman was crushed to death under a speeding vehicle on the Sector 8/18 dividing road last night, a 42-year-old PGI employee died and four persons were injured in a head-on collision between a scooter and a bike near Khuda Lahora last night.

2 held for extortion racket
Chandigarh, November 7
The UT police has arrested two persons, including a girl from Delhi, for running an extortion racket under the garb of mediapersons. The accused have been identified as Puneet Dhingra (33) and Disha (26). Both had introduced themselves as mediapersons to certain police officials. The police has registered two FIRs against them, one at the Sector 39 police station and the other at the Mani Majra police station.

Bank official arrested for Rs 13.5-crore fraud
Panchkula, November 7
CBI sleuths today arrested Naresh Kumar, an Assistant Manager in the Sector 10 branch of the State Bank of India (SBI), from Rajpura in connection with a fraud case of Rs 13.5 crore. Naresh Kumar was produced before a court, which remanded him in five-day police custody.

After onion, tomato prices spiral out of control
Chandigarh, November 7
Frequent changes in vegetable prices in the past six months have altered the household budget of city residents. During the past few months, the cost of tomato has witnessed the maximum increase if compared with the rates in June this year. People are already reeling under high prices of onion.

Better panchkula
Public transport system needs overhaul in P'kula
The major problem is that the city has no exclusive connectivity from one sector to another and towards important public offices and landmark places, even it has expanded beyond the Ghaggar and is continuously on the expansion spree. Most of these 32 buses ply on inter-city routes from Ramgarh and Zirakpur towards Chandigarh through some sectors of Panchkula.

MC records faulty: Schools
Chandigarh, November 7
City-based private schools have challenged the property tax records of the Municipal Corporation. In various letters written to the Municipal Corporation, most of the schools stated that the local civic body had wrongly included the name of their school in the defaulters’ list. They mentioned that the schools had already cleared their dues.

City residents woke up to a chilly morning with mist hanging in the air today. The meteorological department has predicted foggy days ahead. Although, the city received “trace rainfall” today, the department predicted such weather will continue tomorrow as well.

The Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) has received only four objections relating to the proposed extension of the limits of the civic body. The issue of extension has assumed significance as it relates to the question of an addition to the number of voters as well as municipal wards, which will ultimately impact elections of the corporation.

Rs 10 lakh donated to construct school
Chandigarh, November 7
Students and staff of Bhavan Vidyalaya, Chandigarh, have embarked on an ambitious plan of building a school in the flood-struck Uttarakhand. On an appeal that the chairman of Bhavan Vidyalaya, RK Saboo, made last month, the children and staff responded enthusiastically and have worked in unison to collect Rs 10 lakh within a week, informed Vineeta Arora, principal of Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27.

City raises a toast to literature

The second edition of Chandigarh Literature Festival kicked off with a panel discussion of authors and critics on “What comes first: Great writing or Great criticism?” at Taj Hotel, Sector 17.

Paul Merchants under I-T scanner

Sleuths of the Income Tax department today conducted search operations at 20 business houses of the Paul Merchants in the country. The team conducted search operations in Chandigarh, Mohali, Delhi and Mumbai. The teams were led by Director (Investigation) PS Punia, along with around 150 officials.

The world heritage team today inspected the Kalka railway station. Informing this, Kalka railway station superintendent Vinay Arora said a team headed by two delegates Christ Florish and Andria Bass from Switzerland inspected the carriage and wagon (C&W) section and washing line of the station.

3 booked for raping widow

The police has booked three persons for raping a 28-year-old widow of nearby Saidpura village. Though a case has been registered against the accused, including a property dealer, but no arrest has been made till now.

Clean chit for retired Major in rape case
Panchkula, November 7
A local court today acquitted Major Harish Chander Sharma (retd) from the charges of raping two minor girls. Pronouncing the decision in the case, Panchkula Additional District and Sessions Judge Gurvinder Kaur acquitted Major Sharma in the case, which was registered under the POSCO Act.

A city-based builder has been penalised by State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission for delaying possession of flat within the promised period. Sushma Buildtech Limited, Industrial Area, Phase I, Chandigarh has been directed to pay Rs 1 lakh to complainant, along with a refund of Rs 34,09,657, with interest at the rate of 12 percent per annum, from the respective dates of deposits.

An unidentified person (around 30-year-old) was found dead under mysterious circumstances near a railway track under the Dhakoli overbridge today morning. According to a vendor, the victim, who seemed to be under some depression, was seen roaming near the railway track since last night.

The arrangements of Chandigarh Police were perfect to host the 14th All India Police Lawn Tennis Championship. The road leading to CLTA courts usually remains choc-a-bloc due to large numbers of cars parked on the road. It was cleared to welcome the participant officers.
