Seizure of gold: Verification under way

The Excise and Taxation Department is conducting a verification of the gold seized last night. The department had seized 170 kg of gold worth Rs 60 crore belonging to an upcoming jewellery house on Rani Jhansi Road.

Three more cases of dengue reported

Three more patients have tested positive for dengue. They were admitted to the ESI hospital in the city today. Among them, two are male, according to the District Epidemiologist, Dr Anil Verma.

No fiscal crisis in state, says minister

"There is no economic crisis in Punjab as is being projected by the Congress. The state government will spend Rs 15,000 crore on the development of villages and cities during the next three years," said Finance Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa while talking to mediapersons at the residence of BKU president Balvir Singh Rajewal here.
Social bodies do their bit at Chhapar Mela

NGOs, public undertakings and religious organisations emerged as major providers of public facilities to those visiting the Chhapar Mela at Guga Mari near here this year.
Besides organising community kitchen and chhabeel, the organisers arranged medical facilities for all, including devotees and officials on duty, at the event.

Road construction in rain

Though the much-awaited road project in the local Grain Market started on Sunday, it soon courted a controversy. Construction work, which was postponed by the Punjab Mandi Board authorities around two months ago on the pretext of the rainy season, was carried out while it was raining.

I-T department team surveys two units

The Income Tax Department today conducted a survey at Master Trust in the Feroze Gandhi market and at Shiva Tax Fab in Model town. The survey was held on the directions of Additional Director of Income Tax Sunil Kumar Yadav. The department checked the log books and sale-purchase books at both the places.

Traders welcome hike in limit
Ludhiana, September 20
The Punjab Excise and Taxation Department has increased the limit for audit returns to Rs 1 crore. Earlier, it was Rs 50
lakh. The increase has found favour with traders while some are of the view that the VAT returns should not be audited at all, as they already file audited income tax returns.

Mann seeks fair probe into case

Simranjit Singh Mann, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), met the Commissioner of Police and sought a free and fair probe into the murderous assault on a retired assistant sub-inspector (ASI) who was shot at after four persons barged in their office at Dharampura on March 7. The ASI's son, a Youth Akali Dal leader, had a miraculous escape in the attack.
