Cong wins 11 of 24 Ladakh council seats
Ehsan Fazili/TNS
Srinagar, August 28
While the Congress won 11 seats, its coalition partner, the National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir bagged eight seats in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil, where the counting of votes for the 24 constituencies was held today. Of the 26 seats, two candidates were already elected uncontested and the elections were held for 24 other constituencies on August 22. The NC’s bigwig, Ghulam Hassan Khan, sitting MP from Ladakh constituency of Jammu and Kashmir emerged victorious from Silmo constituency of Batalik area, defeating Niaz Ali Kan of the Congress and Kulsoom Bee of the opposition PDP. An alliance between the ruling National Conference and the religious school, Islamia School Kargil helped the NC to give a close fight to the Congress, though the NC led the last LAHDC for five years. The opposition PDP and BJP, which had also fielded eight and 12 candidates, respectively, failed to open their accounts in the region. Except NC’s MP, Ghulam Hassan Khan, there were no senior level leaders, state or national, to contest the elections. Though Khan has emerged victorious in the Council elections, it is yet not clear which of the two coalition partners could be able to lead the Council for the next five years. Of the 26 seats in all, seven are independents, and their support to any of the party would determine the leadership of the next Council.
