Two securitymen killed in twin Valley attack
Suhail A Shah

Anantnag, August 26
A CRPF man was shot dead in Shopian and a member of the Special Operations Group (SOG) lost his life in Arwani area of Bijbehara in twin militant attacks in the Valley today.

In the evening, a CRPF personnel was killed and another injured after a visiting lawmaker’s security came under militant attack in Awneera village of Shopian district.

Earlier in the day, an SOG member of the police was gunned down and a civilian was injured after suspected militants fired multiple shots on a policeman in Arwani area of Bijbehara, a South Kashmir district. Police reports said an MLC from the ruling National Conference (NC), Showket Ahmad, was on a visit to Awneera village of Shopian district.

“As soon as the MLC entered a party worker’s house, his security cover came under fire from suspected militants,” police sources said. There was a brief exchange of fire in which two CRPF personnel were injured. “They were shifted to a hospital where one of them succumbed to his injuries, while another is undergoing treatment,” police sources said.

The slain CRPF man has been identified as constable Raju Ram and the injured man has been identified as constable Lalu Ram, both from the 14th Battalion. In the earlier incident, an SOG member of the police was killed and a civilian was injured after suspected militants fired multiple shots on a policeman in Arwani area of Bijbehara.

The slain constable has been identified as Salamatullah Khan. He hailed from Uri town in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

According to reports, Khan, posted at the local SOG camp, was on duty in the Arwani market when some unidentified gunmen fired at least nine rounds at him.

The impact of the firing was so severe that Khan was killed on the spot, while the civilian, who was shot in the arm, was shifted to sub-district hospital, Bijbehara. “He was discharged from the hospital after treatment,” a police spokesman said.

Police sources revealed that the assailants decamped with a magazine and 30 rounds of ammunition from the slain policeman. The police and the CRPF immediately cordoned off the area and launched a man-hunt to nab the gunmen involved in the killing.

The incidents of target killing have been on the rise in Kashmir, particularly in the southern region, since last year.

On July 18 some unidentified militants fired at the security guards of a renowned cardiologist, Dr Jalaluddin, in Pampore area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district. While the security guards were killed on spot, the doctor succumbed to his injuries at a Delhi Hospital.

On August 16 a policeman survived a murder attempt after the weapon of the assailants developed a snag in Anantnag town of south Kashmir.

The militant outfit Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) has advised the general public to stay away from the cops in market places, as they will be targeted.

The militant outfit had circulated posters in Tral town of Pulwama district on July 3, vowing to carry out target killing of policemen.
