Moga, July 26
A former minister and senior Congress leader Inderjit Singh Zira allegedly 'forced' as many as 100 children, who were in school uniform, to accompany him along with his supporters and stage a protest outside the Mini-secretariat here on a hot Friday.

District Magistrate Arshdip Singh Thind and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Surjit Singh Grewal reportedly came down from their offices and offered drinking water to the children.

The Congress leader stage-managed the protest against the managing committee of the Adarsh School of Manawan village and the district administration for showing door to some teachers of the school during the current academic season.

Zira raised slogans against the district administration and also allegedly misbehaved with the SSP. "Zira misbehaved with senior officials of the administration in my presence and forced the students to sweat out in the scorching heat," Thind said.

Chairman of the managing committee of the school JS Dhaliwal, when contacted, said the protest was unwarranted and amounted to violation of human rights of the children who were forced to sit on a dharna in school uniform. "We will lodge a complaint against the Congress leader before the State Human Rights Commission," he said.

What’s the matter

There were 32 teachers at the school last year, which was in accordance with the strength of the students. As per the government norms, there should be at least one teacher against 40 students. In the current academic year, the number of students dropped by 50 per cent. The contract of the teachers ended on March 31 this year. Therefore, a fresh interview was called by the management and in accordance to the strength of the students 12 teachers were given the jobs on merit basis.

However, the teachers, who could not get the job or did not appear in the interview, 'forcibly captured' the school premises and did not allow the students and the newly recruited teachers to enter the school after the summer vacations.

The Congress leader, Inderjit Singh Zira, is demanding that left-out teachers be given jobs in the current academic session. The school management maintains that the left-out teachers could be adjusted only if the strength of students increases in the session.
