Protest after rape attempt in Abohar: An alleged attempt by a youth to rape an eight-year-old Dalit girl at Kikkarkhera village triggered strong protests on Tuesday. The accused, identified as Kala Singh, has been arrested. Preliminary inquiry revealed Kala allegedly took the girl to an orchard on the pretext of getting her sweets from a camp of a panchayat candidate and tried to rape her. The girl was rescued by a farmer. Scores of villagers later held a protest. — OC

life in Faridkot jail: Two week after he was arrested for allegedly abetting suicide by his wife, a Moga youth, Deepak Kumar, on Tuesday ended his life in the Faridkot Central Jail by hanging himself with a window of a bathroom. Besides Deepak, his mother and sister were also named accused in the abetment to suicide case. Sources said he was found hanging with a cloth around his neck. betting in Rajpura: The police on Tuesday claimed to have busted a gang of bookies involved in betting on county matches. The accused, Dheeraj Kumar and
Chandarkant, were taken into custody from a car parked in Rajpura. Two of their accomplices, however, managed to escape. Superintendent of Police Bhupinder Khatra said, “We have recovered a laptop, 10 mobile phones, Rs 1 lakh cash and a diary containing betting records.” Sangrur
Farmers protest ‘poor’ power supply: Protesting against the "erratic" power supply during the ongoing paddy season, Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan) activists on Tuesday staged 'dharnas' outside the power corporation offices in Lehragaga, Dirba, Cheema and Dhuri. The protesters alleged that though the state government had promised uninterrupted eight-hour supply, they were getting it only for four to five hours. Union's Lehragaga block president Bahal Singh Dhindsa demanded that the state government, which was claiming it had surplus power, should provide 12-hour supply to their tube well motors. Tarn
