Uttarakhand: Rescue operation underway as death toll rises to 150
New Delhi/Dehradun/Uttarkashi, June 20 (ANI): Rescue and relief operations are underway in Uttarakhand after early monsoon rains have swollen the Ganges, swept away houses, killed at least 150 people and left tens of thousands stranded. The rain and landslides since Sunday have stranded pilgrims at four revered Hindu shrines, washed away bridges and roads and caused other damage in Uttrakhand. Meanwhile Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna said that the current flood situation in the state, where flash floods have claimed over a hundred lives and stranded thousands, is very grim and needs immense aid on all fronts.
LK Advani meets RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat
New Delhi, June 20 (ANI): Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader LK Advani on Thursday met Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat at the Sangh's office in New Delhi. On Wednesday, the meet between the duo was cancelled after the BJP leader conveyed that he was "unwell". Bhagwat, had played a significant role in asking Advani to withdraw his resignation from key posts of the BJP last week, after the latter voiced grievance over Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's elevation as the BJP's 2014 poll panel chief
Rupee slumps to record low; bonds, stocks slump
New Delhi, June 20 (ANI): The rupee slumped to a record low on Thursday, while stocks and bonds were hit, after the Federal Reserve signalled a tapering of its monetary stimulus, highlighting the country's dependence on foreign capital inflows to fund its current account deficit. Market was also hit by data showing China's factory activity weakened to a nine-month low in June. The rupee fell to a record low of 59.9350 to the dollar, breaching past its all-time low of 58.98 on June 11. The rupee was trading at 59.82/81, down from its 58.71/72 closed on Wednesday. The BSE and the Nifty fell more than 2 percent each.
