Even as hundreds of people from the tricity are still stuck in the flood-hit Uttarakhand, a family of 12 members from Sector 40 here managed to return home safely from Hemkund Sahib yesterday. With tension still visible on their faces, they recounted their horror tales.

Goyals shudder at thought of visiting Kinnaur again
Chandigarh, June 20
AK Goyal and his wife Anupama narrate the ordeal faced by them in Kinnaur, at their house in Sector 46. After spending three horrifying days in the rain-hit Kuppa in Kinnaur, where AK Goyal, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Ministry of Environment, had gone to inspect hydro projects along with his family, the Goyals have decided never to visit this area in the state along with their children again. They were left in the lurch after the only road connecting Kuppa with the outside world was washed away.

VIP’s car triggers pile-up
Chandigarh, June 20
The car with a red beacon that was involved in a pile-up at Sector 11 in Chandigarh on Thursday. An official car belonging to a judge of the UT Labour Court “went on the rampage” this evening in Sector 11 and rammed into a stationary car, which further hit two cars, damaging these. The judge was not in the vehicle, having a red beacon atop, at the time of the accident. The car was being driven at a speed of over 100 km per hour.

Snatchers target councillor’s mother-in-law in Sector 40
Chandigarh, June 20
Gurbax Rawat, councillor, looks at her mother-in-law Shakambari's ear injury after the snatching incident. In an embarrassment to the UT police, two youths on a blue bike allegedly snatched a gold chain and a pair of gold earrings of a 63-year-old woman in Sector 40 today. The woman, Shakambari Rawat, mother-in-law of area councillor Gurbax Rawat, was returning home from her routine morning walk when the incident occurred at 7.15 am.

1,041 cases in 5 yrs, only 484 solved
Chandigarh, June 20
The incidents of chain and mobile snatching are increasing at a fast pace in the city with bike-borne miscreants causing a scare among residents. According to the police statistics, more than 200 incidents of snatching are reported in the city every year and less than 50 percent of these are solved.

CTU to slap fine on Tata Motors
Chandigarh, June 20
The Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) has decided to slap a penalty on Tata Motors Ltd in connection with a low-floor bus catching fire on June 5. Around 20 passengers in the CTU low-floor bus had a miraculous escape when its engine, located on the rear side, caught fire near Sector 51 in Chandigarh.

Comedy play “Doctor Ulta Pulta”, an adaptation of Moliere’s comedy play “Mock Doctor”, was staged at the Tagore Theatre today. Adapted and directed by Shyam Juneja, the play revolved around Mangal, a wood cutter, who was projected as a famous and expert doctor by his nagging wife.

Osteoporosis more common among rural women

Defying the common perception that osteoporosis (thinning of bones) is more common in urban women due to their sedentary lifestyle and minimal exposure to sunlight (vitamin D), the women outreach programme of the PGI, under which several women in city have been screened over an year, has found osteoporosis more common in rural women.

PU to re-conduct fourth-semester MSc (chemistry) exams

Panjab University has decided to re-conduct the examinations of paper I, II and III of MSc (chemistry), fourth semester. The decision has been taken after the exams were held prior to the date sheet at SGGS Khalsa College, Mahilpur in Hoshiarpur.

Students fill their forms at Government School, Sector 20, Chandigarh, on Thursday. T Admission to Class XI is set to witness a tough competition as 15,500 students are in the fray against the 12,700 seats for various streams in government senior secondary schools here. As per information, science and commerce are a favourite among the students. As the last date for submitting the forms was over today, 2,385 forms were submitted at GMSSS-10, 2,696 at GMSSS-46, 3,368 at GMSSS, Mani Majra, and 2,039 at GMSSS-20.

Members of the Panjab University Students’ Union (PUSU) today staged a protest outside the Vice-Chancellor’s office over their demands. PUSU leader Yadwinder Singh said PU students who got a compartment and cleared it after completing their degrees, were shown as private candidates on their certificates.

Two motorcycle-borne youths allegedly snatched Rs 8 lakh from a jeweller on the National Highway No-1 near the Ambala Cantt this morning. The jeweller, Jagmohan Jain, runs a jewellery shop in the Ambala City.

532 nominations filed on second day in Fatehgarh Sahib

On the second day of filling the nominations for the election of sarpanchs and panchs, as many as 532 persons filled their nominations in the district. Baljit Singh Sandh, ADC (D)-cum-Additional District Electoral Officer said in the Sirhind block, 24 filled papers for sarpanch and 67 for panchs, in Bassi Pathana block 15 filled for sarpanch and 41 for panch, in the Khamano block 39 filled for sarpanch and 111 for panch, in Amloh block 57 for sarpanch and 150 for panchs and in the Khera block 11 filled nominations for sarpanch and 17 filled for panchs.

Agriculture Dept promotes commercial crops in Dera Bassi

To break the traditional paddy-wheat crop cycle and encourage the commercial crops, the agriculture department has decided to increase the area under the cultivation of maize crop during this season. For this purpose agriculture department has been distributing the maize seed on 75 per cent subsidy to farmers.

Police fails to submit record in court

Mohali, June 20
A Mohali court pulled up the local police for not presenting the records in the Faceook case.
The court had asked the police on Tuesday to submit the record in the case to check the basis on which Section 380 (theft) has been pressed against Tarminder Kaur and her son Gunveer Singh in the case and to decide on the anticipatory bail plea moved by the woman.

Hit-and-run case
Cops suspect bike skidded, wasn’t hit

Chandigarh, June 20
Clueless in the hit-and-run case in which a 17-year-old girl died on Monday, the UT police is now investigating whether the bike skidded on its own resulting in the fatal mishap.
District-level boxer Megha had died after she fell off the motorcycle her cousin was riding on Monday afternoon. The accident occurred on the road separating Sectors 29 and 30. She succumbed to her injuries at the GMCH-32 on Monday night.

Disc jockey booked
Chandigarh, June 20
A disc jockey was booked for playing loud music without permission and threatening a constable in Ram Darbar last night.Constable Bumit Singh stated that he was on duty with a police vehicle as gunman when he got a call at 10.17 pm about the playing of loud music at Ram Darbar. He reached the house and asked disc jockey Surinder Nath to bring the volume down. But he refused and also threatened the police constable.
