Two bookies arrested

MC, LIT fail to provide info despite Commission orders
Ludhiana, June 8
It seems that the officials of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation as well as the Ludhiana Improvement Trust are not taking the Right to Information Act seriously. This could be known from the fact that owing to the irresponsible attitude of these officials, the MC has been fined a total of Rs 15,000 and the LIT Rs 5,000 by the State Information Commission.

GLADA to develop PSPCL land as downtown area

The entrance to Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd complex in Ludhiana, which will be developed into a downtown area. To bring Ludhiana city on the tourism map and to develop it as a model project, the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) is planning to develop the prime Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd (PSPCL) land on Ferozepur Road here into a downtown place.

Students excel in BCom II exams
Ludhiana, June 8
Students of Sri Aurobindo College of Commerce and Management celebrate their success in Ludhiana. Panjab University, Chandigarh, declared the results of BCom II, here today. Once again, students from Ludhiana district proved their mettle by scoring top positions in the university. Niharika Mehta, a student from Aurobindo College of Commerce, has topped the BCom II in PU examination.

Ludhiana: Various workshops were conducted at the Spring Dale Sr Sec Public School, which were not only to beat the heat but also to train the students in various fields of their choices. The students learnt all the activities with full enthusiasm. A valedictory function was held along with the workshop.

Police urges bank branches to take preventive steps to curb robberies
Mandi Ahmedgarh, June 8
The local police has urged the in charges at various branches of commercial banks, at local town and surrounding towns, to take proper preventive measure for keeping miscreants and robbers away from their respective branches. They further said that any person, with an unexplained stay near the branches, should be identified.

Relief to bus operators
Ludhiana, June 8
With the recent orders issued by the Punjab and Haryana High Court that in case the films have not been manually put on windowpane glass and the glass is certified by the manufacturers as conforming to the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act 1988, then the petitioner would be free to approach the court for directions to the police against harassment and for imposition of damages on them.

Aadhaar card enrolment drive from June 10: Deputy Commissioner
Ludhiana, June 8
A campaign will be initiated for the enrolment of Aadhaar cards for residents who had not enrolled themselves. The Deputy Commissioner, Rahul Tewari, said the campaign would start from June 10 to June 25. He appealed to all the residents to get Aadhaar cards made as all the government subsidies and schemes would be linked to Aadhaar cards.

Punbus contractual staff threaten state-level strike on June 10
Jagraon, June 8
The members of the Punbus Contract Workers' Union staged a protest today against the state government at the Jagraon Depot of Punjab Roadways. A large number of union members took part in this state level protest organised for pressing the state government to get long pending demands of the drivers and conductors hired on contract basis fulfilled.

Rice millers flay FCI’s procurement policies

22-year-old youth commits suicide
Ludhiana, June 8
A man committed suicide by jumping into a canal after being embarrassed by a woman. The deceased was identified as 22-year-old, Rajwinder Singh, a resident of Nanak Nagar. Jatinder Singh, brother of deceased, lodged a complaint against a neighbour, Joyti, that she had embarrassed Rajwinder in public which led him to commit suicide. Jatinder told the police that Rajwinder was in a relationship with Jyoti, wife of Pardeep Kumar, and they had some conflict in the past. Rajwinder had gone to Joyti's place to solve the problem but she humiliated him in public. Upset from the incident, he jumped into the canal. A case has been registered against Joyti.

American students visit India for Hindi classes

Professor Afroz Taj from the United States teaches Hindi to the students as a part of ‘Summer In India’ programme under the Department of South Asian Studies of University. Professor Afroz Taj from North Carolina University, who teaches Hindi in the Department of South Asian Studies said that the university gave a grant of one million dollars for funding the study and promotion of Hindi and access to Hindi lessons online.

Death of pregnant woman
Police awaits postmortem report
Khanna, June 8
The mystery about the death of a pregnant woman at CHC Manupur has still not been solved, since the postmortem report is still awaited. The SHO Samrala, Harjinder Singh, said that the police was recording the statements of the concerned in this regard. He said that they were also verifying about the location of the doctor at the time of incident and action would be taken after a proper enquiry.

Labour crisis to get over by June-end, says expert
Ludhiana, June 8
The Industry in the city is feeling the heat and is expected to bear losses as the production of the units has come down up to 50 per cent in the last 2-3 months due to prolonged labour crises. The labour-shortage phase, which was up to one month till recent years, had extended up to more than two months this time and the textile and garment industry was the major sufferer with the pendency of export orders up to two months.

3-day workshop on Gurmat sangeet begins on June 14
Ludhiana, June 8
A three-day workshop on Gurmat sangeet inspired from the ragas mentioned in Guru Granth Sahib will be organised at the Gurdwara Guru Gyan Prakash, Jawaddi Taksal, from June 14. The workshop will be convened by principal Sukhwant Singh, who has been a mentor to Ishmeet Singh and Devinder Pal Singh, stars of reality music television show from the city.

Women cops to get vehicle facility

Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner of Police has ordered all Station House Officers (SHO) to ferry women police officials for their duty and spot. This decision was taken after finding that the female police officials deputed at different police stations used to reach their respective destinations late as they do not have vehicles.

Three drug peddlers held
Jagraon, June 8
The Jagraon police has arrested three alleged drug peddlers in separate operations during the last 24 hours and seized huge a quantity of habit forming drugs and 30 kg of poppy husk from them. The accused have been identified as Hardeep Singh, a resident of Khurshaidpura village near Sidhwan Bet and Rajinder Kumar and Naresh Kumar, both residents of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar.

4 snatchers arrested
Ludhiana, June 8
The city police has nabbed four persons of a snatcher gang, who were allegedly planning for a big criminal activity in the city. The accused were identified as Sukhdev Singh alias Sukha, Raj Kumar alias Raju, Lalit Kumar and Yogesh Bharadwaj. The police officials have recovered sharp edged weapons from their possession. According to the police officials, they had received a tip-off that five members of a snatcher’s gang were planning for next action while sitting under a tree at Rakh Baag.

Powered by strokeful innings from Prabhjot Singh, Tanvir and Anmolpreet Singh, Patiala, hoisted a mammoth score of 644 runs and declared their first innings after losing eight wickets against Ludhiana on the second day of the four-day match in the Punjab State Inter-District Cricket Tournament (U-19) for the Dhruv Pandove Trophy being played at the Punjab Agricultural University ground today.
