UT finalises eco-sensitive zone

Finally, the UT Administration has proposed an area ranging from 2 km to 2.75 km as the eco-sensitive zone around the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary.

ASI caught taking bribe of Rs 1 lakh
Chandigarh, May 14
ASI Jagdish Ram (centre) being taken for a medical examination after being caught taking a bribe in Chandigarh on Tuesday. The Vigilance cell of the UT police today arrested an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) with the Haryana police, posted in the Haryana Chief Minister's security, for allegedly taking Rs 1 lakh as bribe. ASI Jagdish Ram was caught while taking a bribe of Rs 1 lakh in the Sector 10 parking. The entire amount was seized from him.

Adviser upholds cancellation of Vivek High School
Chandigarh, May 14
UT Adviser KK Sharma has upheld the orders of the Estate Office and the Chief Administrator regarding cancellation of the lease of the land allotted to the Bhagwant Singh Charitable Trust that runs Vivek High School in Sector 38 here.

Cops get vital clues in robbery case

The six robbers, including two women, who perpetrated a robbery at a house in Sector 4 here last night, went to Ambala immediately after the strike. Talking to Chandigarh Tribune, Panchkula Commissioner of Police Rajbir Deswal said they had got clues about their escape route.

Complaint filed against PGI chemist

A complaint was filed against a chemist shop located at the Advanced Trauma Centre of the PGI for supplying a fungus-infested saline bottle (IV fluid) to a critical patient on Thursday.

MC to impose tax on commercial properties in five more villages

The House Tax Assessment Committee of the Municipal Corporation today decided to impose property tax on the commercial properties of five villages of Hallo Majra, Kajheri, Palsora, Maloya and Dadu Majra. These villages were included in the MC limits in 2006.

Timings of dental institute revised
Chandigarh: The working hours of the dental hospital of Dr Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital, Panjab University, will be changed from May 16 to June 15. The revised timings will be 8.00 am to 2.00 pm (Monday to Saturday) without any lunch break. The registration of the patients will be done from 8.00 am to 12.00 noon.

Two arrested with intoxicant tablets
Fatehgarh Sahib, May 14
The district police has arrested two drug peddlers and recovered 73,000 intoxicant tablets from their posession. SSP Gurmeet Singh Chauhan said the Sirhind police during a checking of vehicles recovered 65,000 intoxicant tablets from a scooter and during the investigation, the owner was identified as Mohit Sharma, a resident of Sirhind Mandi.

Banks to hold loan camps on May 24

Banks will organise special loan camps on May 24 at the Bachat Bhawan to sanction loans to unemployed youths under self-employment schemes of the government. This was stated by MS Jaggi, Additional Deputy Commissioner, while presiding over the meeting of the consultative committee of various banks organised by the State Bank of Patiala today.

Vimlesh Tanwar, Special Judge of the Fast Track Court, Ambala, has sentenced three persons to life imprisonment in a robbery and murder case. The three accused, Santosh, Mangal and Ashok, were the members of the Babaria gang.

HC dismisses plea of counsellors

Counsellors in the UT Education Department, asked to quit two years ago, have failed to get relief from the Punjab and Haryana High Court. A Division Bench has dismissed their petition for continuation.

Youth acquitted in rape case
Chandigarh, May 14
A 20-year-old youth, who was in the news last month for fleeing from police custody, was today acquitted by a court in a rape case registered against him. The accused, Deepak, will continue to face the trial a separate case of escape from police custody registered against him. At present, he is out on bail.

Leave of staff a policy matter of institute: HC
Chandigarh, May 14
A Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has ruled that the grant of total leave to a class or category of employees is a matter of policy. The ruling came less than six months after a Single Judge asserted that the employees should be more interested in “working”, instead of looking for leave admissible to them.

Police remand for 3 in murder case
Mohali, May 14
The three accused in the Naya Gaon stabbing case, Raju, Rajkumar and Akash, were sent to four-day police remand here today. They were produced before the court of Mohali Judicial Magistrate Surbhi Prashar, who sent them to police remand. The police had demanded seven-day remand of the accused.

Juvenile held for teasing girl
Chandigarh, May 14
A 14-year-old boy offered Rs 5 to an eight-year-old girl and asked her to have physical relations with him. The girl informed her mother who called the police. The juvenile boy was arrested in a case of eve-teasing. The case has been registered at the Sector 39 police station.

2 players dropped from team

Everyone must have heard of performance-based selection in sports but beat this. Two students of a local school were dropped from the boys’ (U-16) soccer team of the city because the school did not cooperate with the Chandigarh Football Association (CFA).

Dr CK Jerath, president of the Chandigarh Amateur Boxing Association (CABA) has been nominated by the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) as technical director of the 14th National Senior Women Boxing Championship to be held at Khatima, Uttarakhand from May 18 to 23.
