Chandigarh, May 2
Haryana Finance Minister HS Chatha today announced an 8 per cent hike in dearness allowance (DA) of state government employees. The hike from existing 72 per cent to 80 per cent will be effective from January 1, 2013.

Chatha said the hike had been effected on the pattern of Central Government employees. This will put an annual burden of Rs 420 crore on the state exchequer. But the liabilities for the current financial year will be Rs 490 crore as the allowance will be paid to the employees for 14 months from January 1, 2013 to February 2014.

Meanwhile, the state Cabinet today approved major amendments to its Sports Policy-2009. This involves an increase in cash awards to outstanding sportspersons, provision of similar incentives to differently abled sportspersons, scholarships to SC sportspersons, and honorariums to Dronacharya, Arjuna and Dhyan Chand awardees. — TNS
