Shortage of drinking water in Anantnag
Anantnag, April 1 Reports said crores of rupees have already been spent on different water supply schemes; however, these schemes are making no difference whatsoever on ground. In far-flung villages in Anantnag, people, mostly women-folk, still have to tread miles to fetch drinking water. “There is a water tank in the vicinity which was constructed back in the seventies. The population has increased manifold and the water tank is not sufficient for all the people,” said Mukhtar Ahmad, a resident of Dooru area in Anantnag district. Residents of the area said they get a water supply of one-two hours a day, that does not suffice and they are forced to fetch water from the fresh water springs in the vicinity. In Shangus area of the district, a water supply scheme worth Rs 2 crore was completed, but it does not serve its purpose. “The water supply system is unable to pump water to the households,” said Muhammad Saleem, a resident. “The scheme was supposed to put an end to the water crisis here, but has been held ransom by the authorities, adding to our miseries,” he added. The villages affected by non-functioning of the scheme are Kreeri, Khanpora, Mahadphal, and Kanlipora. The woes of the people in Model Village in the Kokernag area are no less than in other areas. “What kind of a Model Village is this where people cannot afford to have potable drinking water?” said Adil Hameed, a resident. He said the women-folk still have to tread long distances to fetch water. “We are literally living in stone age. While the world is moving ahead, we are still looking for drinking water,” he stated. The situation in urban areas of the district is no better than that in the rural ones. People from towns of the district say even though they do get water supplied to their homes, it’s not potable. “We do not have a filtration plant in our area,” said Shameem Ahmad, a resident of Bijbehara town. “The water is so murky that it’s futile to even boil it. We have been pleading with the department concerned but according to them, there is nothing wrong with the water,” he said. A water supply scheme for Anantnag town has been in the works over the last three years, but is nowhere near completion, adding to the woes of the residents. |

Shopian remains shut for second consecutive day
Anantnag, April 1 Stray incidents of stone-pelting were reported from some parts of the Shopian town; however, the situation remained rather calm compared to Sunday. Widespread clashes amid a shutdown were observed in the town and its peripheries, on Sunday after a youth namely Zubair Ahmad Turay, son of Bashir Ahmad Turay, a resident of Bonna Bazar area was detained by the police on Saturday evening. Demanding the immediate release of the detained youth, people of the area said it’s the sixth time that the police has detained him, that too without his fault. “The police have been unnecessarily harassing Zubair and his family,” the protesters said. On Sunday morning, the protesters, demanding immediate release of Zubair Ahmad, clashed with the police and the CRPF personnel. “Police used tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters,” reports said. “Soon, the clashes spread to other parts of the town including Gagren and other villages in the periphery,” it was stated. People alleged that the police thrashed several people, including two teachers who were dispensing their duties in a local coaching centre. Reports of a senior police officer getting injured during the clashes were rubbished by the police authorities. In adjoining Zainapora village, protests broke out after Shakir Ahmad Mir, who, according to reports, is the District President of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, was detained. |

Police foils Delhi chalo yatra of NYC, detains 3 members
Srinagar, April 1 Nearly 1,000 members of the association, from various districts of the state, were to head for the yatra on foot, covering 873 km. District authorities, sensing trouble, had directed the local police officials at Kothi Bagh police station to detain the leaders of the association. Muddasir Hassan, who was released in the late evening today, said the yatra was still on and that they would come up with fresh dates of commencement of the yatra in a few days. NYC Association has been demanding a written assurance of creating a job-oriented policy for them or reservation of quota in recruitments, after they were asked to resign from their services last year. The youth claimed that they had exhausted all the options of meeting the higher authorities, including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who had assured them that their grievances would be settled. “So far, we have only got verbal assurances from the CM and his ministers that they are by our side. The dubious NYC scheme under which we were engaged as volunteers in various public departments has marred our career opportunities. In order to dispel the protests of 2010 on streets in the Valley, the state and the central governments had made claims of providing employment to youth through this scheme, only to disengage us later.” Aijaz Shah, general secretary, NYC said. Earlier, senior state cabinet minister, Ali Mohammad Sagar said although the terms of service of NYC volunteers clearly stated that they would be engaged in various public departments for two years’ time, the youth should be engaged through an alternative job policy so that they do not feel alienated. |

Protest against detentions in Kashmir
Srinagar, April 1 Untoo, who appeared in Press Colony, near Lal chowk area,
had tied his hands with chains, which were also put around his neck. Besides, he was carrying a banner
with a photograph of Shabbir Shah. However, as soon as he appeared in the area, a contingent of Kashmir police, which was
already waiting there, whisked him away to a nearby police station. Untoo condemned the arbitrary detention of Shah and demanded the release of scores of
prisoners languishing in different jails across the state and outside. Shah, who is also a senior executive member of the Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umar
Farooq, was shifted to Kotbalwal jail in Jammu from the Central Jail, Srinagar, on March 16 despite his “ill” health. The police had arrested him on February 9 and lodged him in Central
Jail to ward off protests in the wake of Afzal Guru’s hanging at Tihar Jail,
New Delhi. During a press conference on March 26, DFP leader Moulana Ambdullah Tari had condemned the arrest and the subsequent shifting of Shah to Kotbalwal jail and demanded his release. In the wake of protests over the hanging of Afzal Guru on February 9, scores of separatist leaders have been arrested by the authorities in Kashmir over the past two months. Besides, hundreds of youth who took part in the protests and stone
pelting have been detained in different police stations across Kashmir, with many of them booked under the Public Safety Act. |

Hearing of petition challenging Mirwaiz’s house arrest deferred
Srinagar, April 1 In the petition filed by Mirwaiz before the HC through his counsel, his continuous house arrest had been termed as illegal and it had been prayed that the court issue directions to the authorities for lifting the siege around his
residence and allow his free movement. The petition was listed today before the single bench of Justice Hasnain
Masoodi. However, he directed for listing the matter before some other bench, said a counsel in the case. He said the petition was now expected to come up before some other bench in a day or two. In the petition, it had been submitted that Mirwaiz was the Chief Cleric of Kashmir. His religious freedom and duties had been curbed by his continuous house arrest, Mirwaiz’s counsel advocate Nazir A Ronga said. It had been prayed in the petition that the HC direct the authorities concerned to lift the siege around the residence of Mirwaiz and allow his free movement, which was a fundamental right of every citizen. The authorities in Kashmir had put him under house arrest soon after his arrival from Delhi on February 21. The restrictions on his movement and political activities were put in the wake
of execution of Afzal Guru on February 9. Though the authorities had subsequently lifted restrictions on March 28, however, he was today again put under house arrest to prevent him
from visiting Guru’s house in north Kashmir’s Sopore area. Mirwaiz was in Delhi when Guru was executed in Tihar Jail on the morning of February 9. While in Delhi, his movement was barred by the Delhi Police and the restrictions were lifted on February 20. |

Missing youth’s family seeks FIR re-investigation
Srinagar, April 1 “We had registered a case in Kothibagh
police station after our son went missing in 2003 and we want its re-investigation,” said Abdul Rehman Paul, father of missing Showkat Ahmed Paul. “The way
the section of media is reporting that my son has turned a militant, quoting official sources
is just to divert the attention from the real case,” he added. Rehman, a resident of Lawaypora, said his son was a college student when he was picked up
on June 23, 2003 from Partap Park in Srinagar by the Army. “On the court directions, the police constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case of my missing son. The SIT also indicted an Army officer. We also approached the State Human Rights Commission for justice. We
think the media reports about my son joining militancy has to do something with that old
case. This thing needs to be probed thoroughly by the police,” he added. Paul’s mother Fareeda, who is also a member of the Association of
Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP), said had her son been alive, he would have called the
family at least once. A senior police officer said they were also looking into the reports of a disappeared man turning into
a militant. |
