2 killed, two hurt in accident:
Two persons were killed and as many received critical injuries after a collision between a car and a mini truck near Chunni village on the Mohali-Fatehgarh Sahib road on Thursday night. The deceased (both drivers) have been identified as Sanjay Singh of Chunni Khurd village and Kuldeep Singh of Shahjadpur village. The injured, identified as Manjit Singh and Jagtar Singh, were rushed to the local Civil Hospital from where Jagtar was refereed to PGI, Chandigarh.

Peddler held with poppy husk
: The police has nabbed a drug peddler, Shamsher Singh alias Shamma of Daulatpur village, after recovering 2 quintals of popy husk from his possession. Superintendent of Police Lakhwinder Singh Khera said the accused was arrested at a naka laid near Asanpur village. The accused was smuggling the contraband in his SUV. A case has been registered at Rahon police station.

BSP protests closure of schools
: Hundreds of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) activists on Friday burnt an effigy of the state government to protest its decision to shut down more than 690 primary schools in Punjab. BSP state general secretary Jarnail Nangal alleged that the decision was "anti-people" and "anti-employee".

Rs 35,000 looted from Malerkotla resident
: Three unidentified motor-cycle borne youths allegedly looted Rs 35,000 from a Malerkotla resident, Mohammad Jamil, near Hakimpur Khatra village. The incident occurred when Jamil was reportedly returning from Jagraon in a tempo. The police has registered a case under Sections 392, 427 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code against the unidentified youths. However, no arrests had been made in the case so far.

Absconder in rape case arrested: A proclaimed offender in a rape case, Ranjit Nath of Bhawanigarh, was arrested on Wednesday. He was produced in a court at Sunam, which remanded him to judicial custody till April 9. The police said Ranjit was declared proclaimed offender by a Moonak court on January 5, 2012, after he missed several court hearings in the case registered against him on September 23, 2011.
