Virbhadra hints at CBI probe into phone tap

Chandigarh, March 6
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh said the government would file an FIR against former Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal and a DGP if they were found guilty in the probe being conducted by the state vigilance department into the alleged mass phone tapping during the previous BJP tenure. Hinting at a CBI probe, he said the agency would be involved, if need be.

Virbhadra made a direct reference to Dhumal’s involvement in the phone tapping, comparing his government to the German secret police -- Gestapo -- for its role during World War II. He made a direct reference to a DGP working in connivance with the CM and a coterie of senior officers. Saying no FIR had been lodged as yet, Virbhadra chided journalist who wanted to know whether Dhumal would be booked immediately. “The child is not yet born and you are already talking about his marriage. Let the probe be completed,” he said.

The CM said only 171 of the 1,371 phones tapped during the previous BJP regime had the Home Department’s permission. The rest were tapped at the behest of the CM and his men, it has been learnt, Virbhadra said. “The FIR will have names of all those directly involved in the spy game and also the service providers. The list under study has the names of more senior officials involved in the crime. We will give the correct story at the right time. Just for your knowledge, even the Press was not spared,” the Chief Minister said.
