Class VIII student commits suicide: A 15-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance here on Thursday. The girl, a student of Class VIII, reportedly left the school premises on Wednesday during lunch time with a man with whom she was allegedly having an affair. When she returned, the school authorities caught hold of the duo and also intimated the panchayat. Both were let off after they agreed to end the relationship, it has been learnt.Phagwara
Phagwara youth abducts minor girl: A minor girl was allegedly abducted by a local youth, Rohit, in nearby Kherra village on February 5. In his complaint to the police, the girl’s father, Ram Asra, alleged that the accused had been harassing her for a long time. Superintendent of Police HPS Khakh said the police had registered a case under Sections 363 and 366 of the IPC against the accused, who is still at large. Fake travel agent booked for fraud: The police has booked a fake travel agent identified as Baljit Singh of nearby Malikpur village under Sections 420 and 406 of the IPC on the charge of duping a youth, Mukesh of Majra village, of Rs 1.37 lakh on the pretext of sending him to Kuwait. Neither the accused sent him abroad nor did he give him his money back since 2011, the complainant alleged. 2 drug peddlers arrested: The police has arrested two drug peddlers, identified as Vijay Kumar of local Satnampura locality and Pardeep Kumar of Jalandhar, after recovering 25 gm of heroin and 250 gm of an intoxicant powder from their possession in two separate incidents. The police said Vijay was nabbed near Gobindpura Mohalla with 15 gm heroin and 250 gm of the intoxicant powder while Pardeep was arrested near the T-point of Jagpalpur village. Ropar
Two booked for abducting minor: The police on Friday booked two youths for allegedly abducting a minor girl from her village near Chamkaur Sahib. The accused have been identified as Sandeep Kumar and Sunil Kumar of Bharatgarh and Alowal villages, respectively. In his complaint, the victim's father alleged that his daughter was abducted on February 5 and later recovered from Sandeep's house. The accused were at large, the police said. Sangrur
Govt employees found absent: A surprise check conducted at government offices in Sangrur on Thursday found a large number of officers and other employees absent from duty. Two employees from the office of executive engineer (XEN) of Sewerage Board, three from the office of XEN, Panchayati Raj, six from the office of District Food and Supply Controller and five employees from the office of district town planner were found absent.

70 donate blood at camp: Students of Sri Guru Angad Dev College, Khadur Sahib donated blood at a camp organised to mark the National Youth Day on Friday. As much as 70 units of blood were collected during the event.
