Punjab not convinced with SC mediators on tax sops
Apex court notice to Centre, J&K, Uttarakhand & HP on Punjab’s case
New Delhi, February 8
The mediators, appointed by the Supreme Court to find a solution to Punjab’s complaint against the Centre for extending tax sops to industrial units in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, today informed the court that their efforts had gone in vain.

Spurt in swine flu cases in region; 44 deaths in 5 weeks
Chandigarh,February 8
Health authorities of Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh are in a spot following 44 swine flu deaths since January. A 52-year-old woman from Solan in Himachal became the latest victim of the deadly HINI virus. She died at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla last night.

2002 riots unfortunate, never again, Modi told EU envoys
New Delhi, February 8
At a high-profile luncheon meeting with envoys of the European Union (EU) based in New Delhi recently, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi described the 2002 riots in his state as “unfortunate” and promised that everything would be done to avoid the recurrence of such a situation.

A Russian Air Force aerobatic team comprising five Su-27 fighter planes and one Il-76 transport aircraft participated in Aero India on Friday after a three-day delay. The ‘Russian Knights’ said they “were held back due to legal issues”.
Army’s first Rudra
Deputy Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Narendra Singh received the first Rudra helicopter from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited on Friday. A weaponised version of Dhruv, Rudra is fitted with a machine gun, rocket launchers and guided missiles.
