Crackdown on buses with tinted glasses
Ludhiana, February 7
Police personnel check a bus with tinted glasses in Ludhiana on Thursday. Cracking a whip against buses with tinted glasses, the city police has challaned 250 vehicles in the past 24 hours. The police said despite repeated requests and warnings, the bus operators failed to remove black films from their vehicles and were not following the Supreme Court’s directions issued after the Delhi gang-rape case.

Man gets 10-yr jail in rape case
Ludhiana, Feburary 7
The fast-track court of Additional Sessions Judge Mandeep Pannu has convicted Tilak Singh, alias Tilka, a resident of Bajigar Da Dera, Bharti Colony, Salem Tabri, in a rape case.

Woman robbed of gold bangles
Ludhiana, February 7
Two youths posing as students robbed an elderly woman of four gold bangles worth over Rs 2 lakh at Khud Mohalla. The victim, Inderjit Kaur, said the robbers took her at knifepoint and removed her gold bangles. The victim lost her two teeth during the scuffle. Brij Mohon, SHO, Division No 3, said the knife used in the crime was recovered from the spot.

Thieves strike at seven shops
Ludhiana, February 7
The police records statements of shopkeepers at Hari Singh Grewal Market near Tajpur Road in Ludhiana on Thursday. Thieves struck at seven shops of auto parts dealers at Hari Singh Grewal Market near Tajpur Road and decamped with cash and valuables worth lakhs. The theft took place 100 meters away from a police naka. Thieves decamped with Rs 60,000 from Singla Finance by breaking the cash counter. They took away an LCD television from Simran Auto Deal.

Woman thrashed by ‘tantrik’ dies 
Ludhiana, February 7
Residents staged a dharna outside the Jamalpur police station following the death of a 24-year-old woman. They sought action against a ‘tantrik’ who thrashed the woman leading to her death.

Repair of Old Tibba Bridge begins

Sahnewal, February 7
Workers carry out repair work at Old Tibba Bridge in Sahnewal on Thursday. After the issue was raised in these columns a number of times, the Public Works Department has finally initiated repair work on the Old Tibba Bridge. The eroded edges of the bridge were posing danger to lives of commuters for past many months. In charge of the project XEN Jagdeep Singh Tung said safety of commuters has to be ensured. He said safety of villagers using the old bridge could not be overlooked after the construction of the new one, as both the bridges were meant to complement each other.

One dies of swine flu
Ludhiana, February 7
Swine flu has claimed another life in the city taking the toll to three this year. Sunita Dogra who had tested positive of swine flu died at Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) yesterday.

Uprooted tree yet to be removed 
Ludhiana, February 7
The uprooted tree at Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana. The apathy of the authorities of Punjab Agricultural University can be gauged from the fact that a tree that fell on an electricity pole three days ago has not been removed so far. High-velocity winds uprooted the tree which fell on the pole, disrupting the power supply to the campus.

150 autos impounded
Ludhiana, February 7
Barely three days after launching a drive against illegal autos, the city police today impounded 150 illegal autos and challaned 450 auto drivers for not carrying documents.

Inter-batch competitions

Ludhiana: The annual inter-batch cultural festival of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, Ectopia-2013, entered the second day here today. The day began with events including solo songs, just a minute, antakshri, face painiting, and nail art. Five teams contented for the top spot in the antakshri competition. Finally, the batch of 2009 bagged the honours. Other winners included Preet Kanwal (2008) in painting, Ravika (2009) in sketching, Gulinder (2008) in solo dance, Smridhi (2011) in face painting and Aravdeep (2008) in just a minute.

Drug peddler held for harbouring gangster
Mandi Ahmedgarh, February 7
The Sudhar police has arrested a drug peddler who had been allegedly harbouring absconding undertrials and radical leaders. The accused, Jaswinder Singh alias Mota of Pakhowal, was recently booked for harbouring notorious gangster Harpreet Singh Toosa.

Inspector attacked again, brother booked
Ludhiana, February 7
Inspector Dilpreet Singh, who was attacked by his cousin over a property dispute a few months ago, has now fallen victim to an alleged murderous assault by his brother.

Accused pleads innocence
Ludhiana, February 7
Harinder, alias Honey Dhingra, who allegedly broke arms of his one-year-old daughter following a quarrel with his wife, claimed innocence today. Honey reportedly told the police that his daughter Tanvi accidentally fell on the floor and received injuries. He claimed he rushed her to hospital after the incident.

A match in progress during the All-India Jagtar Memorial Hockey Tournament (U-21) at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, on Thursday. Kurukshetra XI and Sports Authority of India (SAI), Lucknow, survived many anxious moments against their respective opponents before romping home victors on the penultimate day of the seventh All-India Jagtar Memorial Hockey Tournament (U-21) being organised at the Olympian Prithipal Singh AstroTurf Stadium of Punjab Agricultural University today.
