Goods worth lakhs gutted
Ludhiana, January 19
A cardboard factory up in flames near Sabzi Mandi in the Salem Tabri area of Ludhiana on Saturday. Goods worth lakhs were gutted when a fire broke out in a double-storeyed factory near Sabzi Mandi in the Salem Tabri area of the city.

F&CC meeting put off, courtesy DSGMC poll
Ludhiana, January 19
The Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) meeting, which was to be held today, has been postponed for the second time in two days. The meeting has been cancelled because Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria is in Delhi for the campaigning of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) elections.

Police remand for rape accused
Ludhiana, January 19
Two out of three rape accused, who had reportedly raped a 12-year-old girl a month ago, have been sent to police remand today. The third accused, a minor has however been sent to a juvenile home here. The medical examination of the girl revealed that she was pregnant.

Girl says no to ‘greedy’ groom
Ludhiana, January 19
A 27-year-old woman, Ramanjit Kaur (name changed), a resident of Saheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, reportedly refused to marry a man, as the latter and his family members allegedly demanded a Fortuner SUV as dowry and Rs 50 lakh to be spent on the wedding, which was scheduled for December 28, 2012.

One killed, another hurt as bus collides with truck
Jagraon, January 19
The Punjab Roadways bus that met with an accident near Jagraon on Saturday. An elderly woman was killed, while another woman was seriously injured when a Punjab Roadways bus collided head-on with a truck near Spring Dew Public  School, 6 km away from Jagraon, on the Ludhiana-Ferozepur Highway. The accident took place around 9:15 AM today morning.

‘Teri Amrita’ staged
Ludhiana, January 19
Om Puri and Diya Dutta stole the hearts of Ludhianvis with their scintillating performance during the play “Teri Amrita”. The play was staged at Guru Nanak Dev Bhawan yesterday evening.

Jewellery, cash stolen from wedding venue
Ludhiana, January 19
A purse containing cash and gold jewellery was reportedly stolen from a wedding venue here today. The purse belonged to a couple from Jagraon, who had come here to attend the wedding of their niece.

Abducted girl rescued
Ludhiana, January 19
A minor girl, a resident of Barewal here, was rescued by the police from Bihar. Medical examination of the girl was conducted at the Civil Hospital today. Later, she was handed over to her family. A case of abduction of the minor girl was registered with the police on December 17, 2012.

Ludhiana, January 19
Athletes take part in a 1,500m race during the 58th Punjab State Schools Athletics Meet at Guru Nanak Stadium, Ludhiana, on Saturday. Athletes from Ludhiana and Amritsar dominated the proceedings on the opening day of the 58th Punjab State Schools Athletics Meet at Guru Nanak Stadium here today. Players from these two districts won two gold medals each to begin their campaign on a sound note.

RCF, Kapurthala, score facile victory
Ludhiana, January 19
Rail Coach Factory (RCF), Kapurthala, scored a facile 7-0 victory over the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Centre, Badal, in the first match of the 16th Mohinder Partap Singh Grewal Memorial Hockey Tournament. The tournament began at the Olympian Prithipal Singh AstroTurf Stadium of the Punjab Agricultural University campus here today.
