With belly bomb, Maoists planned mayhem New Delhi, January 11
At Latehar, the police detected that rebels had placed a metallic container inside the abdomen of the body of a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) constable, Babu Lal Patel, who was killed in an encounter earlier this week. Sources in a Central Police Organisation said, “The container was placed in the stomach and it extended till the chest.” The IED was designed to be activated by a “pressure release” mechanism, which would have killed the doctors who were tasked to perform the post-mortem of the constable, they said. “The way the IED was placed inside the stomach of the jawan was very complicated. The bomb would have exploded the moment the doctors performing the autopsy would have peeled the layers of the flesh around the area, where the IED was placed. The removal of the flesh would have released the pressure in the IED and exploded it,” said sources. The doctors became suspicious when they noticed stitches on the jawan’s abdomen. “The person who planted the bomb seems very skilled in handling IEDs. Also, all vital organs of the jawan were removed to place the bomb,” they said. The bomb disposal squad took an X-Ray of the jawan’s body which showed a metallic container, nine volt batteries and a power source inside the stomach. The bomb was defused using an innovative technique. The bomb experts placed water-filled bottles strapped with explosives (cordex) on top of the body. The explosives were set off in a controlled manner, leading to a “water jet pressure”, which affected only the stomach area. The bomb squad found an electric detonator, pressure release system and explosives inside the body. The novel manner in which the IED was placed clearly suggests that the Naxals are coming up with new techniques to retaliate. Director General of the CPRF, Pranay Sahay, anti-Naxal operations would be intensified in Jharkhand.
