All set for UT police-DANIPS merger
Chandigarh, January 10
The first-ever induction of five Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) from Delhi on a two-year deputation with the UT police has come in the wake of a move of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to merge the DSP cadre of the Chandigarh Police with the DANIPS (the Delhi and Andaman and Nicobar Islands Police Services) cadre.

Blow to 7 local DSPs, may now have to move out of city
Chandigarh, January 10
Even as the first move of the MHA for the merger of the DSP cadre of the UT police with DANIPS has been welcomed by senior police officers, who feel that the entry of the new incumbents will help improve the overall efficiency of the force, some of the seven UT police DSPs are resenting the move.

Siliguri girl stripped, tortured by couple in city
Chandigarh, January 10
The accused couple in police custody in Chandigarh on Thursday In a horrifying incident, a 20-year-old girl from Siliguri in West Bengal was stripped, beaten up and brutally hit on her private parts by a couple at their rented one-room accommodation in Sector 41 last night. The girl, who resisted going to a hotel for flesh trade, was also captured nude in a video by the accused, who blackmailed her to be a sex worker.

Two youths rape woman, arrested
Panchkula, January 10
A 30-year-old woman was allegedly raped by two youths when she asked for a lift for Barwala near the Barwala-Ambala road this evening. She was forcibly taken to Morni and raped.

Third Shatabdi a hit
Chandigarh, January 10
More than 50 per cent of the executive class tickets of the third Kalka Shatabdi were sold on the first day of booking for the train, which will be flagged off from Chandigarh on January 14. According to the booking record, for the Chandigarh-Delhi journey, out of a total of 56 seats under the executive class category, 30 had been booked till 6 pm today, and of a total of 780 seats in the chair car category, 256 had been booked.

SHOs can’t issue residence proof certificates
Chandigarh, January 10
The Station House Officers (SHOs) of the Chandigarh Police will no longer be allowed to issue residence proof certificates for the purpose of vehicle registration or getting a driver’s licence from the Registration and Licensing Authority (RLA).

A major tragedy was averted today when the pillars of four four-storeyed showrooms in a row started giving way today evening at Shahi Majra village here. Over 200 persons, mostly youngsters, were present in the showrooms, which house several shops, computer retailers and placement centres there.

Swine flu case reported
Chandigarh, January 10
One more case of swine flu was reported from the PGI today. A woman from Rajpura with symptoms of swine flu was admitted to the hospital, taking the total number of swine flu cases at the institute to 10.

Internal rivalry among Congress councillors has once again surfaced when city Mayor Subhash Chawla agreed to take part in the Lohri celebrations of the Sector 21 Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA). Area councillor Mukesh Bassi (who represents Sectors 18, 19 and 21) has been completely sidelined in this entire episode.

Estate Office removes partition from showroom
Chandigarh, January 10
The UT Estate Office today removed a partition from a showroom in Sector 22 here. Officials supervising the drive said the owners of the showroom did not stop the violation despite being issued a notice under Section 10 of the Capital of Punjab (Development and Regulation) Act - 1952. The officials said acting tough on the violators, the estate office had stepped up its drive against the cases of misuse and building violation.

Get ready to pay fine for littering
Chandigarh, January 10
In an attempt to improve the sanitation condition of the City Beautiful, the Municipal Corporation today decided to impose a fine on throwing garbage in the open. The challans would be released only through the local districts court.

Miscreants break windowpanes of four cars in hostel parking lot
Chandigarh, January 10
A PU security personnel inspects a damaged car in the parking lot of the Hostel No. 4 at Panjab University in Chandigarh on Thursday Some unidentified miscreants broke the windowpanes of four cars parked outside the Boy’s Hostel Number 4 at Panjab University here early morning. Although the parking lot is situated just a few metres away from the hostel gate, the security personnel present at the gate was oblivious of the incident.

Eating vends fleecing students at PU

Despite separate rate lists of food and beverages for students and outsiders at Panjab University’s Student Centre, the students end up paying the same amount as the outsiders as the vendors have failed to display these rates. The students submitted a memorandum regarding this to the PU authorities today.

10 fresh representations submitted against recruitments made in 2009

Further doubts have been raised over the recruitment of 536 teachers by the UT Education Department in 2009, after around 10 candidates, who failed to get through at that time, recently submitted written representations to the department, claiming their eligibility under the original recruitment criteria advertised by the department in August 2007.

City hockey team beat Rajasthan
Chandigarh, January 10
On the opening day of the 58th National School Games for hockey, the local team registered a win over Rajasthan in the boys’ U-17 category at the hockey stadium of the Sports Complex, Sector 42, here today. The team pipped the rivals by 17-2. The team of Orrisa overcame Jammu and Kashmir by 18-0.
