Hike in Rail Fares
Get ready for the pinch

Chandigarh, January 9
A file photo City residents will feel the pinch of the hike in railway fares, being implemented from January 21. The hike was announced by Union Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal today. For a railway journey of around 250 km, the commuters will have to shell out around Rs 30 to Rs 35 more, while for a journey of around 770 km, the hike will be around Rs 90 to Rs 100.

Panchkula lad scores 100 percentile in CAT
Chandigarh, January 9
Bringing cheer to the tricity, Anshul Garg, a Panchkula resident and student of the IIT, Ropar, who was tutored in Chandigarh, scored 100 percentile in CAT and was the lucky one to figure among the 10 toppers across the country, who scored 100 percentile. There are over 25 other students from the tricity who have scored more than 99 percentile in CAT, the results of which were declared today.

Woman 'gangraped' in auto at P’kula
Panchkula, January 9
A 35-year-old resident of Ambala has alleged that she was gangraped by four unidentified youths in an auto-rickshaw near Sector 20, Panchkula, here today. She had boarded the auto-rickshaw from Zirakpur for Panchkula.  The Panchkula police is still verifying the facts given by the victim in her complaint. It is coordinating with the Ambala police in this connection.

Power cut spells chaos at ISBT-43
Chandigarh, January 9
For around six hours after 12.30 pm, the entire system collapsed at the inter-state bus stand, Sector 43, today after the electricity supply to the bus stand was disconnected by the Electricity Department on account of the non-payment of bills amounting to Rs 22 lakh.

Overcrowding at PGI: Patients forced to sit on floor

A persistent increase in the number of patients at the Out Patient Departments (OPDs) of the PGIMER has forced a large number of patients to sit on the floor while waiting for their turn for a check-up.

'Yum Leela' staged in city
Chandigarh, January 9
The play "Yum Leela" was held at Tagore Theatre, Sector 18, as a part of the 8th TFT Theatre Festival. The play was directed by Dr Arjun Dev Charan and performed by Ramna Group of Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The play was a satirical take on the widespread corruption and its affect on the society.

Over 1.30 lakh children to get polio drops in Mohali
Mohali, January 9
More than 1.30 lakh children in the age group of 0 to 5 years would be administered polio drops in Mohali district during a three-day campaign starting from January 20. This was stated by Parveen Kumar Thind Additional Deputy Commissioner at a meeting with members of the District Task Force held here today to ensure that 100 per cent targets were achieved during the pulse polio campaign.

Isolation ward for swine flu patients at Mohali hospital
Mohali, January 9
An isolation ward for patients suffering from swine flu has been set up at the Civil Hospital here. However, no such patient has approached the hospital for medical aid so far. Dr Manraj Singh, medical specialist, has been made in charge of the isolation ward. Two ENT doctors - Sandeep Bansal and Sandeep Singh - have been put on duty in the isolation ward.

Guidelines for street hawkers framed
Chandigarh, January 9
The Chandigarh Administration today framed guidelines for regulating "street hawkers" in Chandigarh. According to the guidelines, no licences shall he issued for the sale of bidi, cigarette and other tobacco items; no vendor shall he allowed to remain stationary at a place for a period of more than four hours in a day and shall keep on moving without causing any inconvenience to the general public and creating traffic problems.

PNB pensioners meet minister
Office-bearers of the Punjab National Bank Retired Employees Association met Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal and handed him a representation seeking dearness allowance at 100 per cent of the rate, instead of existing 75 per cent to the workers who retired before November 1, 2002.

PU bends rules for production house
Chandigarh, January 9
It seems that Panjab University is too generous towards the production houses. It is evident from the fact that despite a rule to charge Rs 25, 000 per day for organising a shooting or a promotion event, the university allowed the star cast of a Punjabi film to hold its promotional event for free at student centre.

‘Smart work’ behind my success, says CAT achiever Anshul Garg

Anshul Garg, an engineering student at IIT, Ropar, is on cloud nine after scoring 100 percentile in CAT exam and being one among the ten all-India toppers. Unlike many other aspirants, who believe in marathon study sessions, Anshul claims that he devoted lesser hours to study, however, he gave his best in those hours.

Even though the government is yet to frame any stringent laws to restrict crime again women, some of the girls in the district have formed an organisation "Girls Organisation of India" (GOI) to protect the rights of women in the country.

Chandigarh, January 9
A woman was injured after she was hit with stones by youngsters, who were drunk, at a colony in Sector 32 late this evening. The police has arrested the youngsters. The woman has been admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32. The incident occurred at 10 pm.

Rs 28.12 crore loan for unemployed youth
Fatehgarh Sahib, January 9
The District Dairy Development Department under self-employment scheme imparted training to unemployed youths and arranged a loan worth Rs 28.12 crore from different banks to help them in setting up 440 commercial diary units during last five years in the district.

Woman in flesh trade racket a victim, says court
Chandigarh, January 9
Holding that a woman, who is an accused in a flesh trade case registered under the Immoral Trafficking Act, is a victim of society and not an accused, the court of District and Sessions Judge SK Aggarwal today acquitted a woman of all charges while dismissing the state appeal against her acquittal.

Fast-track courts to be set up
Chandigarh, January 9
Fast-track courts to deal with offences against women will soon be set up in the UT district courts. A day after Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir asked all the High Courts to set up fast-track courts to deal exclusively with offences against women, the UT district courts is all set to act on his orders.

Fiza's property case: Next hearing on February 2
Mohali, January 9
In the case of succession for the Anuradha Bali aka Fiza’s property by her kin, the local court set February 2 as the next date of hearing. Earlier in the last date in December, the court had called objections.

3 cheating cases reported

A UT police sub-inspector’s wife was duped of Rs 42,000. She gave the amount to another woman for investment. Bhagwant Kaur, UT police sub-inspector’s wife, and a resident of Police Society, Sector 51, alleged that Darvesh Kaur, a resident of the GT Road, Dholewal, Ludhiana, and Raj Kumar Malik, a resident of Janta Nagar, Ludhiana, cheated her of Rs 42,000 by investing her money in Guru India Company.

Fraudsters befool 80-yr-old woman

Two fraudsters, including a woman, befooled an 80-year-old woman, Sant Kaur, on the pretext of solving all her problems and took away 50-gram gold jewellery from her at Sector 68 here today.

Police registers missing report in assault case

Tall claims of the UT police about a quick and easy registration of FIRs fell flat when a security guard, who was brutally assaulted and robbed in Hallo Majra last night, was turned back by the police after merely lodging a missing report about a mobile phone.

Dabin Kim of Korea defeated Miki Kobayashi of Japan in a tough three-set clash of girls’ singles category during the ongoing ITF Junior Grade Tennis Tournament, being held at the CLTA Complex, Sector 10, here today. She defeated her rival at 6-4, 5-7 and 6-3. In the match of boys’ category, Pranav Suri lost to eighth seed Wen-Chun Liang of Taipei in straight sets 6-2 and 6-2, while Majid Kilani of Tunisia upset 3rd seed Rishab Agarwal by 5-7, 6-0 and 3-6.
